It is indeed. Old recordings thrown together in an attempt to sell CD's. They've actually advertised it well though.

Sorry to yet again dig up an old thread, but I just received Rolf-Erik Nystrom's CD "Concepts of Sorrows and Dangers" on the Aurora label.

Works of Lars Petter Hagen, Xenakis, Francesconi, and others, including a few pieces by Nystrom himself.

First of all, what an artist, and a refreshingly good choice of programming. I haven't even listened through the whole CD yet (it's playing now, fresh from the mailbox), and already I'm extremely impressed. All new stuff I've never heard (nor even noticed) before, some quasi-romantic, some avant-garde. The music is mostly accessible, and utilizes electronics and LOTS of extended techniques, but in a way that works for the music. Very rare.

Before he got into the deep grass (starting with Xenakis), the first couple of pieces on the CD hit me so hard (positively) that I had to hear them again!

Maybe not something you would find in a traditional recital venue, but if paired with other media, say at a museum or art gallery, or with film or slides, this can be a very effective and thought-provoking program.

Nystrom has an eclectic approach to the instrument and the capacity to vary his tone color a great deal to suit the ever-changing musical situations of his repertoire. I hear some influences of Jan Garbarek, maybe some Daniel Kientzy, and definitely some traditional training. He also possesses a phenomenal technical control of the instrument that serves to facilitate and even augment his brilliant artistic qualities.

    This guy can do anything.

There is a new London Sinfonietta CD "Warp Works & Twentieth Century Masters", on which Simon Haram recorded Spiral by Karlheinz Stockhausen. At $20 on Amazon.com, this CD is a much more affordable Spiral recording than that which appears on Stockhausen's own label, and maybe even better (I love the London Sinfonietta, and I find Haram to be one of the most exciting soprano players out there).

Other items on this CD include works by Reich, Ligeti, Varese, and Cage, interspersed with music of Aphex Twin and Squarepusher. Double-disc.

    Looks interesting.

Do you know of a recording of Miklos Maros Festiggiamento No. 2(I probably butchered the spelling). It's a duet for Alto and Sop. If not, let's play it and record it!

I've never even heard of it, but I really like Maros' Concerto and Rabescatura.

If you own this piece, send me a copy of the alto part, and we can read it together at Wildacres.

I have the score to Maros' Festaggiamento No. 2 and have worked on it at USM. It's a BEAST of work. Hope your ultra high ranges are solid!

I hope it doesn't get more extreme than a G on alto!

Well, I haven't seen a lot of new releases lately, but have noticed quite a few notables have stuff in the can and are awaiting release. Here are a few to watch for:

Prism Quartet - Music of William Albright
James Houlik - On Wings of Song
Rob Buckland - Concertos by Graham Fitkin, Martin Ellerby, and Michael Ball
Claude Delangle - Concertos with the Singapore Symphony (he says May 2007!)
Debra Richtmeyer - Classics for Saxophone and Piano
Jonathan Helton - American Music for Saxophone and Piano
    Brian Sacawa - American Voices
Timothy McAllister - Ibert Concertino with Hot Springs Festival Orchestra
Lutz Koppetsch - told me he has a solo CD coming out soon, but that's all I know about it.

The alto part could go up to an A at the end, but Gwozdz rewrote the last page to where that wouldn't happen since the Alto was ending up ending on a higher note than the soprano. It's not too bad, just real fun to listen to

Dr. Gwozdz didn't really re-write the last page. He told me he suggested to Maros what you have said about the alto ending up higher than the soprano, and Maros altered the ending of the work by reversing the two parts. I have both versions.

    Default J.M. Londeix Box Set

I just picked this up at the NASA Region 5 Convention and raced home in the snow and sleet to make sure I got this posted before Angel scooped me.

Four CD set, Jean-Marie Londeix: Portrait - Private Recordings Volumes 1-4 on the MDG Archive label.

To save some typing, I'm posting a scan of the track listing.

Only thing I can't yet figure out is whether all of this is previously unreleased. Some of the stuff definitely overlaps released material, but I haven't figured out yet whether they are actually the same recordings.

That's a lot of good material on Londeix's box set. Is it available online for purchase? I've tried searching around the usual spots, but I can't seem to find it...maybe I'm not trying hard enough.

It's the same German company that put out the Raaf Hekkema Paganini Caprices which is available on Amazon, so my guess is that it just hasn't worked its way through the distribution channels yet. It wasn't clear to me who brought them to the conference to sell. Paul Bro would be my best guess.
