I've played a handful of conns and played on a very early 6m (262xxx) for a period of around 9 months. I recently made the switch to a mark VI and couldn't be happier. Not that the conn is a bad horn, my mark VI just has less little things to worry about.

I voted Selmer. Reason: Keywork fits my hands like gloves.

I like the VI...it just seems to produce a more flexible sound to me.

I sold my Mark VI alto I played for 18 years after I bought a late Tranny. After 6 months of playing them both I gradually just stopped playing the Selmer. I did buy a cheapo Selmer copy when I want to play with modern ergonomics. I ended up using a Barone neck on it with Brilhart mouthpieces and yep.....I'm sounding more like my Tranny.

Responce and tonal core are what I most like about the Conn.

I have a Conn Chu alto and Conn Tranny tenor so I am biased toward those. I am shooting for a tone like Lester or Charles Lloyd. Although, I've recently been listening to Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis. Can I get a "Lockjaw" screamin' tone on my Tranny? What mouthpiece will work best for this? I've been herneating myself trying to develop a more brash, husky, Lockjaw like tone.

I recently played a Conn New Wonder (I think it's a II) and Mark VI sopranos. According to the new owner of that Mark VI it's a good one, from the many he has tried (especially with intonation). I have no idea how the Conn compares with others of same model. For sound alone, it's a hard choice. Really I can't decide. They are both great and probably some of my favorite sopranos. I wouldn't mind playing either considering only the sound, eventhough they are different. I think overall the Mark VI has a better sound, but I'd probably prefer the Conn. A huge advantage for them over most other sopranos I've tried (all modern ones) is they are much lighter. I prefer the keys of the Conn much more too than the Mark VI which just felt weird.

Definitely the Conn. Way more flexibility, expression and just plain "balls" when you need it. As for keywork, the Conn gives nothing away to Selmer.

    Ok, fine. . .geez .

I'll still go with my Selmer. I've played several Selmers and several very good Conns, and I guess I just prefer the sound of the Selmer. It's easier for me to sound like how I want to sound on a VI than on any Conn I've played. That's not to say that I wouldn't happily accept a mint New Wonder if someone were to give me one for free. . .

A New Wonder bari is going to have more of a bite to its sound than a Mark VI bari. As for sopranos, I'd take the smooth warmth of a VI soprano any day over a Conn soprano, which I feel are a bit too strident.

I'm the owner of tenor Chu now, but I've played VI too... What can I say...

VI is ok, but I prefer Chu sound. Because of its large low tones, you know...

I chose Conn in the poll, but I should clarify.

Soprano- I prefer the NW soprano. The tone just sounds...less nasal. I am saving up for one of these to replace my current Chinese soprano.

Alto- Conn. The lower ends of the Selmer are easier to sound, but the Conn has more guts all around. The response of the NW is very good if the horn is set up right.

Tenor- The VI gets my vote here, but keep in mind that I've played on more VI's than Conn tenors. The NW I played on was good and loud...but did not have that "singing" quality. This was on a 1917 non-rolled toneholes model. I would like to try one of the 1923 horns. The alto's I've played that were made right before the series II have been great horns, I'm thinking that the tenors may follow the same rule. Another possibility may be that I just like the "Selmer Core" with tenors.

Bari- I've only played one Mark VI low Bb bari and have never had a go on a Conn, so no opinion.

So where are all the bass players here? Bootman, what say you?

I have played both (MkVI Alto; various Conn altos and tenors) and prefer the Conn for the tonal mass its sound has.
