My last horn purchase is a mint 2007 Aquilasax C Melody, and it came with a Jody Jazz C Melody #7 mpc, plus the manufacturer's #4 mpc.
The JJ has lots of edge and gives me very good intonation across the instrument.
The original owner recommended bass clarinet reeds...he included two Legeres...they were too soft for me.
I contacted Jody Jazz and they replied:
"Tenor reeds work well with the C Melody. Try a D'Addario Select Jazz 3S or 3M.
Or if you're going for synthetic a Legere 2.5 or 2.75.
I've not tried a Bass Clarinet reed with it but I'd imagine it would work too. The C Melody mouthpiece is basically a tenor mouthpiece with a shorter shank."
I've been using 2.5 tenor Fibercells, the same as I use on my tenor horns, and so far am happy with the results.
I have not seen D'Addario reeds in any stores in my area.
Regarding the Jody Jazz C Melody mpc: I inquired as to why it isn't listed on their website.
They replied:
"The Classic C Melody mouthpiece that you said came with the horn is a discontinued model. We discontinued the Classic line about 4-5 years ago. It is a great playing mouthpiece but we could no longer stock the spoiler that goes inside the mouthpiece because it was no longer available through our source."
Bass clarinet reeds in production are the closest to correct for a C Melody mouthpiece. However, sometimes an alto or tenor mp (with complimentary reed) will give adequate intonation. Its a research project combined with trial and error to find a mouthpiece that works with the elusive C Tenor.
Try putting a piece of sponge slightly soaked with listerine and water on the reed, under the mouthpiece cap. BTW, Does using a tenor mouthpiece on a C Mel sax affect the intonation?
