I now have three altos; all Bueschers - a B7 TH&C, a 140 Big B and my latest acquisition a New Aristocrat. I mostly play the B7 and my primary set-up is a Phil-Tone Solstice with a Hemke 2.5. I also use a Phil-Tone'd Meyer and long shank Soloist from time to time.

So far I am mainly playing the NA with a Caravan large chamber or Wyman refaced Buescher. This setup is a very interesting exploration for me and one which I am enjoying and would probably use in a concert band setting.

Recently switched out my Yani a992 for a 78xxx Mark VI. Both are great horns, but the Selmer has my affections!

Following bruce bailey's lead, I finally tracked down a (modern) Selmer Super Session D on clearance. Sounded real nice on my Zephyr, though not perfect in all ranges. Then I tried it on my The Martin with a Rigotti Gold 2.5 strong and Vandoren M/O lig, and ... dang, this horn's never sounded better to my ears! So rich and easy blowing, I can voice pianissimo way down to Bb like never before, but stillÂ*blow the doors off higher up, all the while keeping the perfect balance of clarity and spread. Plays a bit darker with a La Voz medium, but still nice and full.

'Guess it's no surprise that bruce really knows his Martins.
A little bit louder and a little bit worse.

My backup Zephyr's in the shop for major repairs, so I've happily returned to The Martin, but with a new, killer setup:

    1949 The Martin
    Ted Klum Focustone Acoustimax 6
    Rigotti 2.5 strong
    Vandoren M/O lig

I also finally gave my new-to-me backup-backup horn its first real, gut-wrenching try-out today:

1960s (?) Boosey & Hawkes Oxford (Kohlert Bixley stencil)
    Jody Jazz HR 6
    La Voz medium
    Vandoren M/O lig
A little bit louder and a little bit worse.

MKVII 70-something..gold lacq Elkhart engraved. No mods, simply a perfect alto. I play a Buescher Artisto late model for a bar horn or backup..

    Mpcs:
Lakey 8*3 with a shaved clear BARI soft reed, standard 2 screw lig, all purpose mpc blows crazy good for Big Band Lead alto or smooth Lounge sound.

Sakshama Custom G goldplate, 404 Selmer Lig, Legere Signature, the best R&B rock screamer I ever played, and stills subtones like butter, I had an orig handmade DG studio, this one's better.

And of course my prized Metalite M7 ..old brass 2 screw lig, fibracell reeds (..this mpc is my requisite door-stopper, great sound btw)

    Selmer MKVI 143,XXX
    M.C.Gregory Model A 4M16
Whilst not going for either, I'm much more appreciative of Desmond / Pepper than Sanborn. My set up just occurred this way though.
I have a back up which was my first serious Alto
    YAS 62 Purple logo.
Then a small collection of other 'usual' mouthpieces to dabble with such as a Meyer, a Java, a berg.
Regarding the M.C.Gregory, when I bought it I was definitely after the airy traits I hear in Pepper and Desmond ballads. In the begining I heard them but with such a small tip opening I found it hard work on the low notes and wondered if it was a lemon. I just stuck with it as the problems could be worked around. I'm not a prolific alto player so I haven't worked too hard but by the time I got to change the reed the problem had just disappeared from the conscious mind and its doing everything I had hoped. This is enough experience to understand why a piece will work for some players and not for others! You can play in a certain way, you can adapt without feeling you are compensating. Who's to say I was right or wrong pre MC Gregory?

Reeds Vandoren V16 3, but need to play about since the mpc change.

My beloved Series II..... just had an accident. It is going to need repairs.

Though.... I have a brand new Series II... but have thoughts and my Reference 54 still has an argument for me....

    Jubilee Series II Selmer Paris
    Vandoren Jumbo Java A45
Vandoren Java Green No. 3 reeds.
    M/O Gold Plated Vandoren Ligature.

Main horn: Conn 6m VII 1936
    Piece: Larsen metal 110 M
    Reeds: Ponzol 1.5

    Backup: King Volltru 1932
    Piece: Larsen metal 100 SMS
    Reeds: Ponzol 1.5

Both overhauled by Steve Crowe. Conn is such a dream to play with this setup in my rock covers band, clean and clear top to bottom, but will scream on demand! Volltru more ladylike, nice for mainstream jazz
