Default We need a band director topic.

I'm not a band director, but I have questions concerning students and the music that would fit into this topic. Also about keeping up the physical side of the instruments. Thanks.

I am a middle school band director and I think this is a great idea.

I have spent years assisting and watching the band directors at the Marin School of the Arts, and Napa High School. What kind of questions do you have? K

I don't disagree, but I will also recommend taking a look at a Yahoo group called Community Music. It's populated heavily by band directors (mostly concert band directors, but some swing/big band leaders as well), players and band librarians. It's been a great resource for me for both information and for locating missing parts and for ideas about programing concerts. Also a good source for administrative issues that community bands deal with. Because it's more narrowly focused, there is less "traffic", hence easier to keep up with than is SOTW. Commercialism is also a no-no.

I retired after 32 years of teaching band at the beginning, junior high, and high school levels and then went into professional band instrument repair which I have been doing for 17 years. I am happy to share my knowledge and experience in this area if anyone has any questions.

I am a band director too, and think school band topic would be a good subcategory on the forum.

    Sounds interesting.

    1. What are some of the changes (positive and negative) in the public or private school band programs over the past 20-30 years.
    2. Is symphonic band still popular?
    3. Are clarinets and flutes still used in most drum and bugle corps?
    4. How did you build a jazz/lab/stage band program? Did you use modern charts with a wide mix of musical styles?
    5. How is the recruitment at elementary level these days? Do the students have as much interest in band as they did in the past?
    6. Has financial "cutbacks" in the arts caused any issues in your programs?

I will also recommend taking a look at a Yahoo group called Community Music
Do you have a link for this? Could not find it.

When you guys say "topic," is what you are proposing the creation of a new subforum for discussions related to band directors? If so, I agree that the suggestion is worthwhile, but I doubt that such a subforum on SOTW would be very active. It might even be a ghost town, judging by the tumbleweeds in the Classical subforum now and the general dearth of new threads relating to community bands or other large ensembles that include saxophones.

For the time being, there are a couple of subforums in the Learning, Playing, Performance, Teaching Discussion section that seem appropriate for band director topics: The Band subforum and the High School and College subforum.
