Default Possibly stolen VI on Craigslist

I found this ad on New Hampshire CL, and knew it was too good to be true.

    https://nh.craigslist.org/msg/d/selm...391429671.html

I messaged the seller and they told me that the horn was in Texas, and the SN is M60971, making it a pretty early VI...and for only $2000?

I am trying to keep the seller occupied via email right now. but they are only using the CL email system. More information will be posted when I get it.

Anyone in Texas missing a horn with this SN?

UPDATE: Ad claims it used to belong to his father, who is too old to play. Was offered $1500 a few years ago, but declined. Seller is insisting that Paypal is the only way to buy it, and that they have "family in NH."

    Sketchy.

Odds are fair that the seller doesn't even have this VI and his real goal is to get you to send him money... for nothing.

That's what I figured, but at least since I have an SN, maybe it can help someone else on a long shot.

Best thing is to offer to meet up. If they decline it's most likely a horn that doesn't exist. Ask to meet up at a police station and they decline it's probably stolen. Otherwise it could be a bargain.

Indeed...There's a lot of real estate between New England and Texas though - three days or so by car... Texas alone is 3 times the size of the UK...

This scammer has posted in Lexington, Ky Craigslist as well. I have flagged the ad, but apparently not enough folks have since it remains listed:

Email him and see if he gives you the same SN.

This one has been on craigslist in California too. I just assumed it was a scam since it wasn't bought up right away. Something like this that was real wouldn't last very long. It is also suspicious that they are advertising all over the country for something that could easily sell locally for cash at the price they are asking.

Yes, that's usually a reliable red flag. I think this one is obviously dodgy. A scam.

If you want to buy a great vintage horn in that price range, forget about a MKVI. Look for a nice Buescher Aristocrat, Conn, or Martin.

I have a VI, and a 10m...and an SDA now.

Just trying to help out if someone had their horn stolen and the SN I was given matched.

Yes, and good of you to point this out, both to potential buyers and a possible victim. I was also speaking in general, not necessarily directed to you.

Sometimes it’s interesting to pull their chain.
I saw a nice Audi listed too cheap and the person who emailed me back said that it was her late husbands and couldn’t bear to see it sitting in the driveway anymore. After some scam about buying it through eBay motors I asked where it was and could I come get it. I also wrote that she sounded lonely and could possibly use some male companionship.
I didn’t get any emails after that.

We were looking for a new (used) car recently. I found what looked like a wicked deal on a used 2007 Honda Civic LX. We messaged the seller who got back to us saying that they got the car in a divorce, wanted to sell quickly and had left to Newfoundland. Yadda Yadda, asked for pay through ebay and would have the car shipped to us at no cost. hahaha. I don't think they realized how much distance is between BC and Newfoundland....

We ended up finding something in our budget from a really nice chap.

Exact same pictures, same serial number (which is actually visible here) and description posted to an eBay auction a month ago:
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/Selmer-Pari...-/122780343907

Listed as sold for $6200. Item location was Florida.

Seller's feedback notes 1 recent negative feedback for.... drumroll please, a Selmer Mark VI: "This seller is a scammer. Returned the item and does not want to refund my Money".

Hey, I'd call that good news. At least there was an "item".
