Frankly speaking don’t bother to look for a $100 replacement, it will be a waste of money because you have to have it fitted to your horn ( which will cost some money too) while the octave pip positioning , the length or the volume (or all three) most probably will be different on any cheap alternative.

I bought a new Selmer original neck for a SA 80 II and paid less than $200.

    Good Luck!

At that point I'd suggest selling your Selmer and getting a cheaper instrument. You'd end up with a good working instrument with its original neck.

What kind of Selmer have you got?

According to your serial number you should have a Balanced Action.

    A very valuable saxophone.

That is if we are talking of a Henri Selmer Paris France.

    But is it?

Could it be that you are enquiring about a Selmer USA?

In that case we are probably talking of a cheap instrument ( more attuned with the context that you are sketching) and then a cheap neck replacement would make sense

Hi, this is actually my grandfather saxophone and i would never sell it.It is a Henry selmer from france!
I surely would wait and try to find a replacement neck which will make it justice in time, im just struggling with money right now and still need to gig!
Im in Ireland, its bad luck because there isn't many shops around... To be honest, i was hoping that someone could give me some clues about where to get such a specific replacement piece...Or an emergency one while i pay my bills and save money for a proper neck...
    Millard,where did you buy yours?
Thanks to all of you for the replies and interest.

I suppose Millard is me ...

I bought that Selmer neck on line in Germany but I am not at all sure that a SA 80 II neck would fit and play well on a SBA!

Some Chinese makers claim they make SBA copies.

I would probably , if I were you, ask the assistance of SOTW member Palo Tung.

He sells Chinese and Taiwanese saxophones and knows his thing, still, necks tend to be more expensive than what you mention being your budget.

The series I, II, and III necks won’t automatically fit.
They will likely need to be reduced in the tenon.
You may be OK with them tuning once fitted if paired with an appropriate mouthpiece.
But really it could be an expensive gamble.
Though perhaps not as expensive as a BA neck.
If you can find one it won’t come cheap.

    This is an interesting discussion.

I thought that the cheap necks sold on ebay were exact selmer copies in dimension (although not workmanship).

if they are... they are certainly not copies of SBA or BA necks

Well, there’s an idiot out there with a stolen Balanced Action neck... the neck itself is worth something north of 1000$. My guess is that the idiot will try to sell it: keep an eye open on flea markets and local ads.

Sometime the idiot is just a friend who wants to demonstrate his limited brain activity with a bad taste joke. In that case it will be back by itself.

    VANGUARD -
    M-61 BRASS
    $ 1,180
We developed a heat treatment method (precipitation hardening/“aging”) for the specific M-61 alloy which allows us to harden the neck tube and bring out the exact tonal color of this metal. The result is a neck with a very smooth frequency curve and a concentration of sound in the high mid-tone area.

    Sound characteristic:

The Vanguard M-61 brass is our most mid-tone focused neck. The sound concentration is in the high mid-tone frequencies resulting in a very punchy and direct feeling neck. It is the neck of ours with the most back pressure/least free blowing (a very good kind of resistance - reminiscent of an 86,xxx Mark VI) which makes the articulation feel quick, the tonal feedback feel narrow and shapeable and enables a huge dynamic expressiveness. You experience that all your energy goes into activating a highly resonant and tight beam of sound.

    REDWOOD

The Redwood line is our original KB Sax neck and was inspired by the sound and tonal feel of the early Selmer Super Balanced Action. It features a colorful mid-toney core sound that maintains a powerful focus from the bottom of the horn and throughout the altissimo range as well as at any dynamic level.

Compared to the Vanguard line, the Redwood necks are slightly less mid-tone concentrated and feel a little more open and spread. An analogy would be the difference between early Super Balanced Action (like Redwood) and late Super Balanced Action (like Vanguard).

We make the Redwood in three different metals: C-69 brass, Hand hammered copper and bronze.

    REDWOOD -
    C-69 BRASS
    $ 1,180

Does anyone make replacement necks with a "distressed" finish for older horns? I don't actually need one but I'm just wondering. A new shiny neck on a old horn with 30% lacquer doesn't quite look right

It’s quite difficult to match a vintage patina but you can always buy an unlacquered neck and put it in vinegar or ammonia fumes for some time to make the finish duller.
Or you can simply wait a couple of years...

If op is $50 to $100 budget I doubt that he would be able to shed that kind of cash ( a copper hand made Gloger neck cost a fraction of that!)
