Default Cannot embed photos using URL. Why not?

When I go to add a photo in a post there are two choices as always, a) upload the photo from my computer, and B) paste in the URL from its location on the internet. It used to be that both worked for jpg extensions, but now the URL method refuses to accept these addresses as well as any address extension such as png, gif etc that were often not accepted in the past. It seems to me that this is not functioning correctly as having to download photos to one's computer each time is an unnecessary step given that sites like Facebook and Whatsapp both accept any address to embed photos and files. What gives?

Are you sure it's not a local issue at your side?

Peter, I'm not talking about posting a link. That's no problem I'm sure. I'm talking about embedding the photo on the post so it shows as a small photo that then expands when you run your cursor over it. Using the icon to insert a photo you have the choice of uploading the photo from your computer or pasting a URL into the long box that pops up. These two alternate so that if you do a photo using the choose and upload link, the next window that appears for another photo is the URL box. The problem is that the URL never works because you get a popup that says the URL is not valid or something. It doesn't matter what type of URL it is, it is not possible to use that method whereas it used to be possible. I used it plenty of times, it just doesn't accept ones with png and a couple of others, while jpg UrLs are fine. Do you understand what I am talking about now?

Any forum I've seen requires a hosted photo.

Hosted?? What's that? We've always been able to paste a URL into the box that pops up when you use the button for photos (next to the one for videos) on the task bar. Then that puts the attachment directly into the post so you don't have to first download the photo to your screen and then up load it to your post. Problem is that now it doesn't work for any photos that it used to and only the upload from your computer option works.

Thanks for the added details Michael, it's clear now.

I remember having tried embedded pictures before, but I never got it working properly.

I found on the internet that when you use "[img] and [/img]" (without the ") around the picture URL it could work, but it's not working on SOTW!

    Test embedded link:

I guess this has to do with some settings on the forum that are now blocking this option.

I will inform the VSadmin guys about this thread.
Let's see if they can help solving this.

Maybe there's a link with the fact that photobucket stopped supporting hosted photos, this gave a large number of issues recently on threads where users had put such images in-line. Maybe VSadmin decided to block this capability altogether?

We wouldn't do that, one because [img] tags are part of core out of the box vb software, two because I feel like that would be NUTS in terms of harming the site. That said, how are you putting them in? Manually with the img tags or through one of the quick deploy buttons? I see a few of each version, the insert image button is a known issue on VB4

Both embedded functions don't work Kyle. I guess it could be linked to some parameter settings on the forum, see my post #8.

Please check this a bit further.

The function still doesn't work. I tried to past the link in the special box for URL and got the error message so had to download this to my desktop to be able to upload it here. Big PITA as it is an extra step and then requires trashing the file from the computer.

    Testing

In your screenshot in post #6, you see that check box that asks you to "Retrieve Remote File and Reference Locally" ?

Can you try using a URL again, but un-check that box? I got the same error message as you, but un-checking allowed me to upload the above

I guess that's the key. Never had to do that before though. Somehow it has changed itself. Thanks for figuring it out.

I'd suggest that you post a sticky explaining how to post photos using that method as many people will be just as confused as I was considering that unchecking that box was never necessary before.
