The sc800 has the older, Mark VI style palm keys, which many apparently don't like. My daughter, who is a high school player, started on soprano a couple years ago with a sc800, which she loves. She took to the horn very quickly, and didn't even comment on the palm keys. Maybe she didn't know any better, since it's the only soprano she's played. She has smaller hands, too. Her instructor loves the tone and intonation she gets with it.
No question as far as I'm concerned, the models starting with the 900 and later are superior in every way. The 800 is very good, but they really upped their game even more from the 900 sopranos and up. Pay the extra bread and go for the 991.
A beginner on saxophone, or a beginner on soprano? If the former, get whichever horn is substantially less expensive (probably the SC800). If the latter, get the SC991 if you can afford it. It will feel more like the player's other sax(es).
it is not only the palm keys or the left hand table but also the curved neck has a much shallower curve in the SC800.
I would certainly prefer the SC991. The playing position is way more natural with this.
