Default What Should I Name My Saxophones?

Up until recently I'd been playing on a school rental instrument, but for my birthday I got two saxophones. I have dubbed them "my children" and I want to name them both, but I don't have many good name ideas. The two horns are:

Yamaha Custom Z alto, gold lacquer finish. My absolute most prized possession, I love him so much (they're both boys). Plays really well and sounds amazing, makes it easy to play more loudly and powerfully. Definitely a jazz sound.

Yamaha student model alto (not sure of the exact model), lighter gold lacquer with silver lacquer keys. He's pretty old and beat up, lots of scratches, doesn't sound as good (obviously). I call him the disappointment of the family lol. He's for marching, since marching with my z would probably not end well.

Any ideas for names? Or if you've named any of your instruments, what did you name them? Thanks!

Names for horns should come naturally in time, or not at all.

I honestly have never heard of anyone's giving a name to a wind instrument, even thinking back to high school and grade school.

BB King famously named his guitar Lucille. Many old Cremona violins have names, but they are usually named after previous owners. You can't just name a Strad "Fred" or something.

I think naming 'things' is corny. A great old friend, a bass player, having in mind BB King's 'Lucille', started called my tenor 'Lucifer'. I never did really use that much but since he's gone now I might think of it every so often in his memory. Actually that was a previous tenor, 130491, that my son has had since 1989. I just don't feel the need to name instruments, cars, houses, guns, lawn mowers or anything else non-living.

I suppose they should have Japanese names.

I've sometimes referred to my Baritone as "Bari" as in "Bari Sax", but I've never called my Alto "Al"

    Curvy and Slurfy of course

TBH, I would never think of naming my musical instruments.

My motorbike has a name, but mainly because the kids came up with it. He is called "Sprinter"
Grassi low A bari (1976), Meyer 9M / Martin "The Martin" tenor (1951), OL vintage Tone Edge #7 / Martin "Indiana" alto (1954), Meyer 6M
Buffet Crampon "Continentale" Bb clarinet (1972), Selmer Focus / Buffet Crampon BC-20 Bb clarinet (1962), Portnoy BP02

They both already have names-----alto. Never understood the need to give names to horns.

I like Biff. Chances are really very good that there's not a single other saxophone on the planet with that name.

I just call my instruments by their name, like, my jupiter, my djalma, etc. I guess in your case, you can call them "Custom" and "Student", or in short" "Cust" and "Stud".

I have never named instruments but I respect anyone's right or desire to do so. ( but we named a car Stan - because it's a Hyundai Getz)

I think however the names should be something you come up with, it is much better than garnering opinions from strangers.

NB: I think one of the most popular boys' names in the UK currently is Corbyn. Do not name your saxophone Donald.

    Adolphe?

Only one of my saxophones has a name. My 1950 Conn 28M is named Darlene (after her original owner, who played her in an all-women dance band back in the day).

Two of my cars have names, but the names came from other people.

So a grasshopper hops into a bar. . . The bartender says, "Hey, we don't get many folks like you in here. Did you know we even have a drink named after you?"
And the grasshopper says, "Why would anyone name a drink Steve?"
