These are both stone classic cuts from one of the most unique voices in jazz. She was great all the way through her long career - continually pushing the form into new places. In addition to the classic abc sides and united artists, some of the stuff she did for the verve label at the end of her career exuded soul and feeling like none other. I'm particularly fond of this sleeper at the end of "it's not about the melody". Brings back great memories of late night summer drives to nowhere in particular...
I saw her a few times and it was always pretty enthralling. She opened for Ray Charles at one but they did not perform together, too bad as their album together was another classic.
Always liked her. Here's a great tune, sadly without Freddie Hubbard and Craig Handy who both play on the album.
