Default P. Mauriat at Guitar Center?

First off, I also play guitar (my reason for going to Guitar Center). Didn't even realize that Guitar Center sold saxophones, but at this store, they have a P. Mauriat System 76 SGL Pro Soprano on display that is marked as "clearance" with a price of $1,119.97. This seems like a really good price for a quality soprano. Should I be leery to get a soprano from Guitar Center? As you would guess, the employees have limited to zero knowledge of horns.

If the store has no woodwind shop, but the horn is truly new, not used, probably the worst that could happen is you'd have to pay a saxophone tech $50-$100 for a good setup of the instrument (fixing any leaks, adjusting key heights, regulating). You're getting a discount on the horn's normal retail price of more than 50%, so it would still be a fantastic deal if you like the sax.

    Yepper.

    Here's a comparo for prices. http://www.saxalley.com/p-mauriat-sy...soprano-1.html

Play it. There's no reason to buy a horn if you don't like it - good deal or not.

That's a really good discount. Even if you don't like it, you could probably sell it for a profit.

Ah, there's a good Flippin' attitude. And who cares of its condition? You can always lie about it...

The OP stated that its a store demo. Who knows how many Guitar Center shoppers have tried to play Stairway or Freebird on it?

Guitar Center owns WWBW and others and sells horns online. Probably a mail order return. Here is their catalog page:

Update.............I played the soprano and it sounded great, so I got it. It was $100 off from the listed clearance price.

And............the guitar players were amazed when I lit into Sweet Home Alabama. LOL.

I've never seen saxophones at Guitar Center, so maybe it was a trade-in? They do sell reeds and neck straps at my local GC, however.

They sell them as part of the collective that Phil pointed out above. I think you can order them online and have them shipped to a specific store and/or return something to a store if you don't want it. Wouldn't surprise me if it were a return or something a customer had the store order and then decided they didn't want it and the store just wanted to get rid of it. I've on rare occasion seen horns in Guitar Center stores but never anything like this that I might want to buy and priced at such a steep discount. Most of the time I've seen off-brand East Asian altos that they want $600 for.

Since GC is so big things slip through sometimes.
The guitarist in two of the bands I play in got a brand new cable for guitar synth for 10% of market value.
In the 80s I got some store demo JBL speakers for 50% off in perfect shape, still have them.

Yeah I've gotten a couple of deals like this as well; one on a very high quality mic stand and another on the P60 Yamaha electric piano I bought several years back when they were clearing those out. I suspect there are deals to be had at these stores but a lot of them are going to be on open-box, demos, floor models, returns, etc. - one-offs that aren't advertised anyplace so you need to go to the stores pretty regularly to stumble across them.
