    Default Mystery alto on Ebay

Just cruising through the altos on Ebay I came across this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ALTO-SAXOP...IAAOSwTM5YwWAW

It appears to have no low Bb, no Bis Bb key, no front F key, no low F# key and pancakes for pads.

Any ideas where this horn is from and how old it might be?

It is a very old saxophone design but the thing may be an Indian saxophone (or "saxophone shaped object":

    http://www.shwoodwind.co.uk/misc/black_museum.htm

scroll down to the middle of the page) and so it's not necessarily very old. Unless you want to make a lamp or nail it to the wall, it's not very wise to buy it.

Indeed we spoke many times about these.

I find them periodically in the Netherlands offered often from people whom claim to have found them in the attic.

I remember when they were sold at street markets together with bad clarinets, tubas and cornets. Often also found as Bessons ( all instruments have the same serial number!)

Saw a horn online with this C-shaped bell-body brace. Anyone know what it is? A latter-day Conn perhaps?

Well, we need to see a bit more. That looks like what you find on an LA Sax when you take the name badges off the bell brace.

I am not sure, this is a Conn, might be the same, although this is soldered and the other one has screws.

    This is a Conn

Here's a lousy pic of the full horn.

You are right, it is a lousy picture especially because it shows the left side of the sax, and from an agle whic, aside the bell to body brace tels us nothing at all.

I seems that the bell to body brace is very large and follows the three point system , with screws, used from all the Selmer inspired saxophones out there, It has a detachable bell too which is more of the same in terms of “ Selmer” inspiration.

So, yes, it could be a Chinese horn with a bell to body brace which has a C to show some relation ship with Conn-Selmer, after all they have imported horns from China and Vietnam the last years after they ceased production in the US.

unless you can get better pictures at the very least of the other side, yes, I am afraid it will be.

If it is at an auction or an ad that you are looking at. The owner should be able to oblige.

The vendor confirmed that it's a Conn. Not sure what model or vintage.

the vendor might very well say that but he should provide the pictures and the serial number pictures to back up his claim.

This picture tells us nothing about the horns origin... but it shows a a nasty dent on the bell. So, in some sense, it's still informative!

ok so we have a dubious horn with a dent, it gets more and more enticing by the minute.

then even as a wall hanger will be worth it.

Here the Indian sax shaped objects shown above make more than that!

It's a later Conn from the UMI period. American made. Some can be good players. Usually model 22, 24 or 34.
