Default Looking to endeavor into tenor...

    Hello all SOTW friends,

I'm looking to adventure into tenor, I've played alto for 7 years ... fairly proficient at it. I've played tenor for three years for my schools Jazz band, played on a YTS -62II. It was great, i enjoyed it quite a bit and i'm finally looking to buy my own tenor to own. My budget right now is MAX $1000, that's pushing it though, as I think i'd be more comfortable in the 800-900 range. I've looked around quite a bit already but not really sure where to start, I've seen people recommending to go vintage.. etc. Thanks for any help and suggestions!!

The Kessler Custom Performance Series Tenor Sax should fit your budget if you are looking for a new horn.

$1,000 is a pretty tight budget for a tenor, but it's do-able. I agree that Kesslers are very nice horns and seriously undervalued, especially on the used market. I was fortunate enough to find one in your price range in the marketplace on this forum and I love mine. You might also be able to find a Cannonball or Jupiter at that price point and they can be decent horns. Anything you buy from a private seller will probably need, at minimum, a setup to fix any leaks, so plan on another $50 - $100 for basic work (assuming the horn doesn't have any serious issues that would cost more.)

Another good option might be a vintage horn from a reputable dealer like JayePDX who is also active on this forum. He specializes in rehabbing undervalued vintage horns and selling them for great prices. I can't recommend him highly enough.

I would not even think of buying a new horn at that price point (aside from possibly a Kessler). I believe you would regret it. Happy hunting!

Thanks for the insight! I think after some thinking I'd prefer to go with the used/vintage route. I'll hit up JayePDX. Thanks for the help again!

Looks like he has a Conn 16m from the 50's in inventory. These tend to have a great sound! Might be worth opening a conversation with him.

The Vito Japan tenor is the same as the Yamaha YTS-23 tenor, the only difference being a slightly darker lacquer and the Vito name.
