Default SOTW TOTM For March 2017 - Blues For Alice

I thank Brendan for asking me to host The Tune Of The Month.
This tune had been written by someone called "Bird", not because he could fly but because he could eat a whole chicken.
His real name was Charles Christopher Parker (1920-1955), I think some people know a bit about him.
The tune is Blues For Alice : who is Alice ?
The structure is a 12 bar blues, but not a conventional one.
In France we call it "blues suédois", that means "Sweden blues", I personally call it "hypertonal blues".

These are the charts, for C Bb Eb instruments and some backing tracks.

Sure, you can find other backing tracks, or create some.

    I hope you like it.

This is the version I really love from Roland Kirk : https://youtu.be/7tVX2EmcvV0

Great pick! Rahsaan's We Free Kings version was the first I ever heard, and I've loved it ever since.

The youtube link goes to a series of amusing French commercials. Try this one: https://youtu.be/d2yQAfOqTf4

If you want a well attended TOTM it's probably best to cut the jokes.

Someone else would probably love to host.

I don't know what you mean, the term "Blues suédois" is not a joke : http://guitarejazzmanouche.com/grilles/perso/view/252/
This a chord progression that works on this tune, not really the same one, but it can give ideas.

I was very obviously referring to the links you've been posting that have nothing to do with Blues for Alice.

I figure out that although it's a very popular tune, not a lot of musicians have recorded it.
I post this because it's fresh and beautiful : https://youtu.be/6-I5teOnqgU
    Very inspiring !

Very nice pick Lionel, and thanks for accepting to host this month and preparing this thread on so short term.

Just added your pick to the main TOTM index:

That is the only link you've posted so far that is a rendition of Blues for Alice.

Perhaps you were not aware that you had posted these links?

We actually did this tune exactly one year ago for the Beginners/Intermediates TOTM, so I have two old versions to share:

    - 'Blues For Alice' (Florida no USA 10* - Plasticover 2) fast (172 bpm):
    http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13336256

    - 'Blues For Alice' (Florida no USA 10* - Plasticover 2) medium (112 bpm):
    http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13338207

Hope to do a new one later this month on my new Robusto mouthpiece.

    By the way:

The current B&I TOTM is 'Fried Bananas' from Dexter Gordon, another nice tune to work on this month:

@mrpeebee : nice performance, the head is difficult when it's played fast, nice solo on the slower version.
I did the same thing years ago, medium and slow.

I feel bad about not posting any recordings in February's TOTM (I still might later today!) so I figured I should get in as early as possible this month and be much more active. Here's a recording of me playing the bird blues in 12 KEYS, a capella. The recording is from a couple years back, and I start in concert F and go up a 4th each chorus. Hope you dig it!

Could you, or anyone, say a few words about the endless array of chords, 2 beats each, in the tune and how you approach playing over them??? Somehow I cannot conceive of playing a line over chords that are changing so fast.

Basically I approach them the same as any other 2-5, except in this case the "landing" is the 2 of the next 2-5 (in most spots). For example (in concert key):

    1: Fmaj <- it's the 1 chord
2: Em7b5 A7b9 <- minor 2-5 in D minor, so you can use the D harmonic minor scale to lead down to Dm7
3: Dm7 G7 <- 2-5 in C major, but if you look ahead it resolves to Cm7, not major (or dominant)
4: Cm7 F7 <- 2-5 in Bb major, which resolves to Bb7 (or Bbmaj, people play both in a bird blues
    5: Bb7
6: Bbm7 Eb7 <- 2-5 in Ab major, but look ahead to where it resolves to---
7: Am7 D7 <- 2-5 in G major, but look ahead to where it resolves to---
8: Abm7 Db7 <- 2-5 in Gb major, but look ahead to where it resolves to---
    9 | 10: Gm7 | C7 <- 2-5 in F major
    11 | 12: Fmaj D7 | Gm7 C7 <- 1-6-2-5 in F major

Because of the fact that the 2-5s are moving quickly, you need to look at specific notes that will help you lead to the next chord- you don't have a full measure(s) to set up the "1" chord- you have to do it in 2 or 4 beats. This is why leading tone (guide tone) lines really help a ton when working on this tune!

Thanks - it looks like mission impossible.

Wait a minute - in last months beginner's TOTM, Four, there was a sequence Em Ebm Dm G7 .... and it could be played Em A Dm G7 .... are there any natural work-arounds for this tune ???

Last year I posted this 'bluesy' slow version with B-3 organ backing track (complete with a major low C glitch in the head ). I also have an up-tempo version also recorded at that time, which I will post as soon as I find it buried in my computer files.
