Default Beginner & Intermediate TOTM for February 2017 - Four

Many thanks to John Kothches for inviting me to select the B&I TOTM for February 2017.

I have chosen the be-bop era tune “FOUR” which, amid controversy, is attributed to Miles Davis. FOUR is a challenging yet appropriate choice for B&I musicians of all abilities, since it can be played effectively at a variety of tempos from moderate swing to ultra fast. Also, there are several discussion of the chord patterns to be found on various internet sites and there is even an old SOTW thread discussing playing over the chords of FOUR:

    https://forum.saxontheweb.net/showth...avis)-Question

Numerous recordings of FOUR in various styles at various tempos can be found on youtube, a sampling of which include:

Miles Davis / John Coltrane - Workin’ (original recording) 1954
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xNbqG9PtyE
Stan Getz - West Coast Jazz 1955
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJ2qAbtZKo0
Gene Ammons / Jackie Mclean – Jammin’ in Hi-Fi 1957
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2i8GRw_1H8
Lambert,Hendricks and Ross - The Swingers 1959 (sax solo Zoot Sims @ 2:43)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fk1c4YFUywc
Dexter Gordon – Bouncin’ with Dex 1975
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkFXWmZ64vk
George Benson / Al Jarreaux - Givin' It Up 2006
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ch8V4bMCoWQ

I encourage everyone to give “Four” a try – I’m sure we all agree that this forum is a learning experience, not a competition.

I look forward to hearing your take(s) - will you be playing it on baritone?

    Very nice pick SSD .

I've played it years back in the former combo I was in, but never made a (home) recording before. Looking forward to do that.

Just added this month thread to the B&I TOTM index thread:

Good stuff, and as you point out, sounds good at just about any tempo from a medium swing on up.

I like the way the syncopations fall at the top of the tune.

Assuming you used it, do you have the BiaB files? 150bpm to 190bpm is a big jump.

Im looking forward to this one.

    Thanks,

Sorry, John I didn't create any of these backing tracks in BIAB. 2 are from Aebersold vol. 7 and the other were down loaded from youtube.

If anyone had trouble viewing/downloading the Appbox links for FOUR, I apologize. Error was on my end and is now fixed in my original post. Happy tooting.

OK, since I chose the tune, here is my recording with the Aebersold vol. 7 (slow version) 150 bpm backing track.

    Sounding really good there.
A nice way to open proceedings.

I wonder if anyone will take the plunge at 210 Bpm?

Thank you Nick. The 210 bpm may be well beyond my chops - but I may give it a try after a few beers.

    Sounds like a good idea.
I'll start blowing the froth off a few now and if I'm still conscious in a few hours, I might tackle it myself.

Nice strong version SSD, well done (except for playing the first phrase an octave up ) .

About the mix: it sounded like you applied some reverb to the backing (or the mixed take), which sounds a bit strange. The sound quality is normally better if you only apply some effects to the sax-only track before mixing it up with the backing. The backing was also a bit loud in the mix (especially that terrible percussive piano of JA himself!).

    Peter,
    Thanks for listening.
Well, if Dexter can do the first phrase up an octave ......... who am I to question.

Didn't use reverb, I was trying out an inexpensive Golden Age ribbon mic and got a lot of clipping. I have just toned it down and eliminated the clipping with my recording software - should be better now.

Lol, that's true! You can see this tune is written by an alto guy (Cleanhead Vinson), it's not easy to start with a subtone C on tenor without bluring, but it still should be possible. I tried to play the theme on a new HR 10mfan Robusto 11* I recently got and starting on that low C was for sure not easy, but also not impossible. Let's see what I can make out of it when I find some time to do my once a month playing/recording session (hopefully next week Wednesday). I think I did play this tune in a different key many years ago, can't remember that low C issue.

The funny thing is that you can here the reverb already on the 1-2-3-4 counting at the start of the song/backing track. Did you record backing and sax in one track, or do you use headphone speakers for the backing and record the sax track separately before mixing it off with the backing?

I recorded on separate tracks and listened to backing track on headphones while recording. Maybe the mic is the problem. I'm going to try another take at one of the faster tempos and I'll use my trusty Rode NT1 mic.

Hmm .. I'm sensing a new trend ... you must quote the previous month's tune in your solo !
Peebee can add it to the rules ...

Very nice SSD - setting the bar awfully high !
