Default Gary Smulyan & David Wells "Inanout"

Had the amazing chance to play with my favorite bari player on the planet Gary Smulyan a couple of days ago. He is so BURNING! Here's a crazy blues called "Inanout" from the Pepper Adams album "Encounter!" with Zoot Sims.

Yeah, I felt pretty roughed up myself after that gig! It's really hard to stand next to him and not try to throw down an assault of eighth notes the way he does. He is the master!

Nice. Was he playing a Low A instead of his Conn 12M?

That album "Encounter" with Zoot Sims is one of my favourite Pepper Adams albums.
I could only listen to a bit your clip due to crap internet connection, but you both sounded great.

LOL, hopefully the resident troll won't show his sour face. That was really excellent playing. Great job David, you're keeping pretty fast company.

Yes, it's always so surreal to play with guys you've admired for so long. I'm hoping we can do some more gigs together......he said he's transcribed all the tunes on Pepper Adams' "Encounter!" album and suggested we set up some gigs doing the entire album as a set. That would be super cool!

That would be cool for sure .

Gary plays in March here in Amsterdam with the great Dutch alto player Benjamin Herman:

I might do a good word for you if I would get to speak to him (but I'm sure you won't need that) !

Congratulations, David. Excellent work ! You and Gary mesh so well together.

It's a bit difficult to be absolutely certain, given that there's no close-up, just the one wide shot, but if I'm not mistaken, that's a Conn 11M that Gary's playing…

David - Great stuff. You DO burn on that 10M....and Gary does seem to be playing a Low A bari. If I recall correctly at one time he endorsed Keilwerth, so maybe it is a KW Low A. Who cares really; he sounds fantastic as always.
