Nothing truly groundbreaking here. As my internal rhythm improves I'm starting to do just a little put of pushing the envelope with the fingers. I was making a conscious effort to include a bit of double time within phrases while still maintaining clear phrases somewhere in the ballpark of 4 bars. I was also trying to drift so that not every phrase was starting as part of the 4-bar constructs of the song structure.

This is an unintentional mashup of Now's the Time and Blue Monk in F on tenor. I lost track of the choruses (Aebersold playalong) so I hopped in with the melody before the end of the track. In true "professional fashion", I played another improvised chorus and then closed out with BLue Monk @ the end.

Now's the Time for Blue Monk.

I want to record my playing, but I always think it isn't good enough. However a vlog on Bob Reynolds' channel convinced me to record. "Perfectionism leads to procrastination, which leads to paralysis."

Criticize my playing! I know there is a part in my piano playing where it sounds off, and that's because I had to edit it to not have this distorted bass sound. There's a spitty sound at the beginning as well.

I also did a take on this tune (the current Song Of The Month on the UK sax forum of Pete Thomas):

Thanks Peter, In fact I've given a little more reverd to my recordings lately. Sounds better to my ears, but maybe I'm wrong

This is a quick and dirty recording of the melody of Round Midnight on my phone. This is the new to me Phil-Tone Mosaic in standard 7* tip opening on a Vandoren Java Green 3. This was my 4th practice session using it.

The Mosaic is a helping get my tone closer to the tone I'm hearing in my head. That makes it a really good mouthpiece for me.

kerry - That was a wonderful take on He Is Here, very well played. The combination of the Dukoff Crystallite/Legere reed gives you one of the buzziest sounds I've heard on alto -but it works. Gospel cd soon?
Thanks for the nice comment! Here is another song -Say The Name with a Vintage Beechler Bellite (has Koz baffle though). Vandoren Java green reeds. A little less buzz

    Blue Monk

Practicing, practicing... Improvisation remains very poor

    Francisco,

What are you doing to work on your improvising skills?

nothing just pick and play, I know it's not enough. I think I always end up on a pentatonic scale, up and down, give some of the rhythm of the melody, which ends up remembering the melody, but I also think that sound always the same

Never played this very nice ballad before, but knew it from the records (the fantastic Sonny Stitt version on bariton).

    - 'P.S. I Love You' (STM NY 9* - La Voz medium):
    http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13555829

Played on a modern Otto Link STM NY 9*, which was refaced from a 7 (before I bought it). Didn't play that piece a lot, but I actually didn't dislike the sound at all. It's a bit darker then the 1950's Florida Link I normally play.

    A : Klingsor serial 016xx (early 60's) - Otto Link STM 9* - Rico Royal 2.5

Here is another tune I recorded recently. We play it with the Big Band as feature for our mail singer, but in a different key and without solo's. Only had time for a quick take and tried to keep up with the written theme, but my reading is not so good, so I ended up soon noodling through the song by ear. Played on a modern Otto Link STM NY 9* (refaced from 7) and a (bit too soft) La Voz medium reed.

I recently did this rather laid back take of "Solar", which is very different from my normal up-tempo approach - all comments welcome.

Peter plays a ballad - that's pretty rare ! Well I guess it's not really a ballad ... it's urban soul ! Love the screaming breakdown around 2 1/2 minutes in.

Nice thick tone - solo builds up nicely and swings from start to finish. Excellent !

Thanks for listening Brendan and for your comments. Better solo building is my current long-term focus and seems easier as I age.
