award star Beginners/Intermediates post your recordings here - 2017

Time for a new and fresh Beginners & Intermediates (B&I) thread for 2017 (continuing from >the last B&I 2016 page<).

This thread is for all Beginner and Intermediate players who would like to share their progress and recordings. Posting your stuff is great, but commenting and discussing on other members post (in a respectful way) is also fine. Main goal here is to learn and encourage each other, besides having some fun with our common hobby (playing the saxophone). New members: don't be shy: share what you've got and try to participate .

We also have a B&I TOTM (Tune Of The Month) here, where a member calls each month a new tune to work on and post our attempts as soundclip or video. Working on and posting other tunes is of course also possible in this thread . At the end of the month the current host appoints a member for hosting next month B&I TOTM (sometimes done by posting an open request in the latest B&I TOTM thread).

Happy 2017 everybody, I've never posted a recording here but this thread has been open long enough with no posts, it's time to kick things off for the new year.

This is a cell phone recording I made of the last few minutes of an impromptu jam at the end of band rehearsal the other night so excuse the audio quality, but it is listenable. Sax solo starts around 1:15. I'm obviously not a jazz player, just an amateur who mostly does funk and rock type stuff. Feedback welcome!

@lotus_esprit5 - Thanks for sharing your recording and kicking off this year thread.

You did a good job on the sax, good sound and drive for this type of music. I can hear you did put in your heart and soul and that's always positive IMO. Pity that this type of music is often spoiled by a drummer who can't control his hyper activity and partly destroys the music, but you did for sure a good job .

A little bit of me on a cheesy arrangement of behind the barn, which might not fit into a Valentine's set list anyway. I don't think my hair is really as bad as it looks here. Or hope. iPhone recording, yada yada.. You might notice that I'm having no problem projecting, and there is only one condenser mic for the whole section.

@BH9 - Very nice and full sounding baritone, well done. And indeed no issue at all with projection .

@kerry - Perfect Sanborn type of alto sound, fits that style perfectly .

Sounds good to me. Which horn? I love the tune, and thought of posting a slightly slower version to the ballad thread myself.

Nice, Nick, nice. Beautiful balladry. Charlie Chaplin would have loved that rendition.

    Thanks.
It's my MKVII Tenor this time.
I thought the piece was relatively bright so paired it with a darker horn.
But the soggy old hemke 3 reed seemed to darken it also.

Here is my version of Charlie Chaplin's 'Smile', with a kind of Bluesy solo part.
Recorded on my new 10mfan HR Robusto 11* mouthpiece:

kerry - That was a wonderful take on He Is Here, very well played. The combination of the Dukoff Crystallite/Legere reed gives you one of the buzziest sounds I've heard on alto -but it works. Gospel cd soon?

Thank you, Bb! Finally, someone has posted something that I can shoot for, without it being too far outside my technical abilities! I've got my work cut out for me, but there are attainable possibilities for me, here. Just the style I was waiting for. Nice job.
Strive to be better than the day before.

    @spongyfish - Welcome to SOTW Paul .

Well played version of this not so easy tune of Duke. But it's not easy to keep such a slow tempo and long backing interesting for the full time. You could try to play some double time phrases or vary a bit more in tone and length of phrases. What setup do you play? I thought to hear a small tip with a harder reed kind of sound. A softer reed could open up your sound a bit more.

Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed it .
