    Default Online Jazz Improv Lessons

    Hey Everyone-

Here's a little video about my lesson series. I'll follow it with a post about my newest lesson and keep going from there as i come up with new ones. I hope you'll keep my lessons in mind if you're looking to supplement your current private instruction or if you're just looking to study online. This can be really helpful if you're in an area where it's difficult to find a jazz instructor. Check out the samples as they come along and visit my site. I've got tons of lessons and samples posted on the Jazz Improv Lessons page.

    Thanks!

I wanted to let everyone know I've added a new lesson in my Soloing on Tunes series. In this lesson, you'll learn how to create a toe tapping, hand clapping, knee slapping solo that swings on chord changes to the standard, "But Not For Me." Check out the sample and visit http://beginningsax.com/Jazz%20Improv%20Lessons.htm if you're interested in more info on my lessons or to purchase the complete version of this one.

This one gives an approach to learning to play chord changes. It's based on the changes to Mack the Knife and is part of my Stage II lesson series on the Jazz Improv Lessons page of www.beginningsax.com

I just posted a new lesson called Metronome Obsession: Practicing in Time. It’s available as an individual lesson or and as part of my Stage II lesson series. In this lesson, I'll show you some of my favorite practice techniques for breaking free of the intimidation and confusion often associated with the metronome, as we work to build your technique and internal sense of time, tempo, and rhythm.

I had opportunity to go though this lesson today. I would recommend it for anyone not using a metronome (you should be) or struggling with it. It starts with the very basics (using the met on each beat) very slowly (50 bpm) on very basic lines and works through using it on just 2 &4 and up through using it on beat one only (200 bpm). It has exercises for practice as well as instructions on how to begin to practice improv using a met on a blues progression. It also introduces swung and straight 8th noted for those who need it.
All concepts are introduced methodically, first counting and feeling the time, then playing. Randy is a very patient instructor, who never rushes anything. This can be a unique trait for recorded lessons. There are 2 separate video lesson lasting about an hour in total and a PDF documenting all the exercises.

(full disclosure... I have no business interests here, but I am a Skype student of Randy's)

Thanks! Got more in the works. It takes quite a while to put the lessons together. I've got one more rhythm section track recorded for another Soloing on Tunes lessons, then I'm planning on taking my rhythm section back in to the studio to put together another set of tracks. Let me know if you have any tune requests. I can't promise I'll get to all of the requests I get, but it gives me a list to work from.
