Weird. I've been tempted to get something like this (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ergonomic-He...oQI9rL755YqAnQ) for my tenor for ergonomic reasons. I hate the placement of my neck screw and that it's on the left (small thing, I know). Maybe I should just choose to BELIEVE.

    Thanks Steve.
It is a great and balanced review.
I won't rush to buy one, but the possibilities you give about why you perceive a difference, are very useful regarding everything that I test.

    This sentence made me smile:
"I was even trying to psychoanalyze myself and figure out if I had been brain washed and was now part of a saxophone screw cult."

I can see, in theory, how the balance of the horn can come into play if the screw is heavy enough, and how that will change how a horn is balanced. That can lead to a different angle of mouthpiece in mouth while playing. And that can change the playing aspects including tone.

I can also see how a new screw may properly tighten the seal regardless of the mass of the screw.

I also know experimenting with mouthpieces and reeds I can take the worst Link STM I have, with the worst reed I have, and with a few mix ups play happily because I believe its another setup.

Cool review. Seems like an interesting concept, I might have to go see Jack and see if I can try one.

I tried something like this in a shop last year. I didn't notice a difference sound wise, but I did like the ergonomics better than the standard neck screw.

This reminded me of an experiment I did years ago with a Cannonball Stone Series where the "resonance stone" in the neck came unglued. I thought "Ha, I'll finally prove this claim is complete bullcrap!"

When I glued the stone back on the difference was immediately apparent. I was pretty mad.

Very cool. Thanks Steve. I'll maybe check my local Ace Hardware for a proper fitting $2 attempt at this. (Perhaps compare a solid bolt -vs- one with washers and nuts)

Steve, why not close your eyes (or wear a blindfold) and have someone else put in the stock screw, or the oversize screw, or no screw at all .... play it without knowing what screw it is (or not) and guess which is which.

    $50 for a screw...??

    $5 would be exorbitant.
My wife, whose ears I trust, said that my sound is much fuller, richer, more powerful and resonant on this set up.
... but really folks... my wife said, " It sounds like a saxophone ".

    Lololololllol

I love this!! A review from a skeptic, who is also I believe an admired person on this forum, acknowledging positive change. Positive effect! I use the similar Klangbogen product and know very well the sarcasm, cynicism, and outright attacks about these types of productson this forum.
But Steve Neff is a trusted source for sax education and especially gear, mouthpieces in particular. I can't wait to see how this turns out.

Is this just another outstanding player tricked by snake oil? Or do the products ACTUALLY WORK?!
    :-D

Lol at the blind fold question. Bring on the sax playing robots triple blind study comments! :-D

Anyone tried a Buzz neck screw, Klangbogen lyre combination?

I'm a bit leery of investing in anything promoted by Valdemort.
    o.k. run the video again.

This shows why there is a need for double-blind testing. Anyone can get fooled. If the thing actually does work then this method of testing doesn't prove it and you can't tell whether it is a psychological effect - as is apparent from the review.

There is a chance that a beefier neck screw could tighten a slack neck and make a difference. If it isn't even in the tightening side then that possibility is out. So can this work in any acoustic manner? It seems unlikely that it could increase or reduce vibrations, whether or not they make a difference to the sound. The weight is insignificant so won't pull the sax down and/or effect the embouchure as a result. So if there's no way it can alter the acoustic properties it must be doing something else. It has to be psychological. People are subject to influence and if you put something on your sax with the expectation that it may alter the sound, you are being influenced. This can occur to anyone. You make the sax sound a certain way. You play differently and the sax sounds different.

I can see that if it helps you bear down on the screw to get it tighter it could help. The other stuff seems unlikely.

    Hi Steve.

I had a similar experience with, the then new to the new to the market, Yanagisawa metal thumb rest with the little metal dots as contact points to the horn.
There is no way I would have shared that experience with the " fact and faith Police" of SOTW ...but I congratulate you on your bravery and the honest review.
