I was trying a Vandoren traditional 2.5 yesterday on my yts-62 w/Vandoren V16 T6 and was getting horrible squealing with the front F, but the palm F was OK. Is there something I could do to the reed to fix this, maybe it should have been closer or farther from the tip? Tighter or looser ligature? Not wet enough? Wrong stiffness? just plain bad?
Front F is a harder note to get out than palm F. Usually on tenor this is not a big a headache as it can be on alto or soprano, but a difference is still possible. How to tell if the reed is the issue? Well, if the response you're getting on the palm keys in general is good and free-blowing with the mouthpiece and reed combo, your setup is probably not at fault. It will be a matter of adjusting your embouchure and breath support, and/or tinkering with the key height openings to tame the front F.
I swapped it out for a plasticover 2.5 so as not to waste practice time, and had no problem with the front F. Usually I'm using either Vandoren Java 2.5's or Traditional 2.5s and have no problem with front F, but just could not get this particular one to work.
Front F is technically an altissimo note which will require more precise voicing than palm keys. So work on adjusting tongue position, soft pallet position, etc. Do NOT tighten your embouchure to get it out.
