I usually lurk quietly here, but I came across an interesting article in the March 10, 1928 issue of Music Trade Review (Section 2, page 19), generously made available by http://arcade-museum.com in their Library section. I've attached an image of the blurb, and here's a transcription of it:
Holton Co. to Make
Lyon & Healy Instruments
Chicago Concern Ends Couturier Co. Contract
and Transfers Equipment to Holton Band
Instrument Co. Factory
CHICAGO, Ill., March 3.-Lyon & Healy has
closed its contract with the Couturier Co. of
La Porte, Ind., for the manufacture of the
Lyon & Healy line of band instruments and
announces that arrangements have been made
with the Holton Band Instrument Co. of Elkhorn,
Wis., to make the line.
The announcement was made this week by
Raymond K. Durham, president, who said: "We
have transferred to the Holton Co. our manufacturing
machinery, including patterns, tools,
dies, jigs, etc. The unique and special features
of the Lyon & Healy instruments will
continue under exclusive Lyon & Healy trademarks.
"The manufacturing will be under the supervision
of our own factory expert, who is responsible
for the development of all of our
models. The Holton Co. has appointed Lyon
& Healy sole agents for the Lyon & Healy
lines."
I have a scan of a 1926 Lyon & Healy Artist Model Saxophones catalog available on my website, The Hot-Dance & Vintage Jazz Pages: http://www.2multiples.com/hotdance/album/main.php?cmd=album&var1=catalogs/lyon/ . Sadly, there appears to be photos of the interior of the Couturier plant on the inside back cover, but a revised price list has been pasted over them and I'm reluctant to damage the catalog in order to see them.
In any case, I'll gladly try to answer any questions - my small way of giving back to this cool, useful forum!
