Hi all,

Looking at the Urtext edition here--and in measures 10 and 12, there are low A's and a low G# (reached by descending line).

Any alternatives? It's gotta be done on alto--competition rules.

Cheers!

+1 for playing it at original sounding pitch.

Also, I'd take a look at the sonata in Bach's collected works (it's in the M3's at the Northwestern library, probably the same or similar at yours) to help make phrasing decisions, etc. Published versions, even Urtext, have editor markings that you may or may not want to follow, and the collected works generally give you some insight as to Bach's original intentions.

For those of you who are interested, the competition site is here, and this is a screen shot of the portion that pertains to this discussion.

Bach is important. Who cares if he didn't write for us? History just happened to work out that our instrument was invented after he was dead. No one can help this fact. Just about everything else (if not everything else; check out Dr. Romain's post) in the competition was written for saxophone, including the piece for the final round which is a new concerto written for the competition. I personally see nothing wrong in requesting a transcription for a competition. Music is music.
