I'm editing my own post from 5 years ago! The name of the product is: "Collins' Hand Made Cork Grease" (not Coffin's).

I've been using it for years and calling it the wrong name. The letter 'L' in the logo looks to my eye like a letter 'F'.

Yes, in the old days cork grease was mutton tallow. But I think the new stuff must be synthetic. Am I wrong? I know for certain that some brass guys are using synthetic lube for their slides and valves.

I make my own from ear wax and navel fluff.
I like to apply it directly from the source, first I jam the neck cork into my ear and twist counter clockwise before removing and inserting into navel with a clockwise motion.

I used ChapStick for a long time with no adverse effect on the cork. Although "lip balms" are not considered drugs and aren't regulated by the FDA, at least ChapStick has been around long enough and not produced Thalidimide babies (you might want to skip that link). "Cork grease" would have less "trial by the public" testing and I just stay away from it. I've since switched to Doctor Slick which, although unfortunately called "cork grease," doesn't contain any animal grease or petroleum products (unlike common lip sticks, lip balms, and cork grease).

Just bought an old horn that had a tube of "Trophy Cork Grease" in the case. It has a menthol smell to it, maybe to mask the fact that sometimes cork grease can go rancid. Yummy.

I just bought 3 tubes of Collins' Cork Grease after finally running out of my stash. Meridian Winds sells it in both tube and tub container.

Never understood the fascination with cork grease. I use cork grease when the horn comes back with a fresh neck cork, and almost never otherwise. If the neck cork is properly fitted, I can go years without greasing the cork. And I usually re-cork the neck when the cork finally falls off (I think the last time I had one done was on the baritone, and when I thought back I am pretty sure that cork was on there for more than 20 years...)

More commonly I use cork grease for key lubricant when a metal key arm and one with cork are sliding on each other.
