Default What is cork grease made out of?

Just wondering. Does anybody know. What is cork grease made out of?

    Lanolin?

    Petroleum?

I guess an animal product because when I was a child the family cat liked to lick it.

Also, will Chap Stick work? (they look so similar).

Soft wax, mineral oil, other assorted 'ingredients'. I don't think there are any 'animal' products in most cork greases, but I could be mistaken here.

Don't use chapstick on your cork, or cork grease on your chapped lips.
A young lady in one of our beginning bands used cork grease for chapstick with some very unsightly results. Think swollen, red, oozing lips from an allergic reaction.

I can't help you there, but here is something I learned from a DogPants post - he recommended lanolin for pads, but I tried putting it on neck cork and clarinet tenon corks.

It works really well, and lasts much longer than ordinary cork grease. You can get it at the drugstore.

    Vaseline works.

Both for cork, and your chappy lips.

Vaseline is one of the worst things to use IMHO.

Some products (including chapsticks) contain lanolin (wool oil) which some people are allergic to.

The old recipe for cork grease was tallow, lanolin and wax. I doubt many have that these days.

Cork grease should have two functions - preserving the cork and lubrication. Vaseline and softer products just lubricate a little. The glue can get affected causing the cork to lift off. some say to avoid petroleum based products to avoid reactions with glue.

FWIW, back in the 50's, when Joe Allard was teaching privately in NYC, he used Vaseline exclusively on neck corks and recommended that all his students use it, instead of cork grease.

I don't know the answer, but can recommend Coffin's brand. I found some about a year ago in the local music store and love using it. Since finding this stuff, i've thrown away all the old style cork grease. Here's a blurb from the web about this product which also intimates what traditional cork grease is made from. (disclaimer; i have nothing to do with this product.):

"Do you think cork grease is all the same… and what's the difference if it's not? As a woodwind technician for over 30 years, and former saxophone maker for Keilwerth, I've corked and recorked thousands of necks & tenons. Surprisingly, over 75% of those damaged were not due from abuse by the player, but more likely from the cork grease makers' blend.

I am amazed at the growth of after-market products for one's horn...whether it be for the tiny "pic" to the mighty contra bassoon. Finding just about anything to enhance the ease of one's playing or products that provide the care for such instruments are abundant. However, one product has basically remained the same for decades... cork grease. It was horrid then and to my dismay, it still is... until now! Aside from the medicinal odor cork grease "proudly" shares to the world, the components of its making in reality does more damage to the cork than good.

Most cork grease manufacturers do little more to their lubricant (typically an animal fat by-product or refined oil sludge) than to add a stabilizer and/or preservative. When added all up, this recipe is sub par for the cork's porous body. Even the so-called "premium" grades are comprised of just 2 to 3 lubricants, my cork grease has 7! Using some of Mother Nature's finest lubricants such as beeswax, aloe vera and vitamin E oil, even the fragrance oil is of the highest standard. Each batch is "hand made" from start to finish. With my homemade recipe the cork's spongy-like character stays alive much longer.
To put it simply....'There is none better.' Oh! and by the way...it comes in 30 incredible fragrances. Plus a non-smelling grease (a historical first!) LOL"

I also like the novel 'Make Room! Make Room!' by Harry Harrison that the film is based on. The 'furniture' in the film is easy on the eyes, too.

Edward G Robinson was excellent as the 'book' Sol.

I think is a moisture of fat, from animal, and candle and a mixture to kill the smell.
