Hi Randall, nice to hear from you. I'm in Williamsport, PA (in the northeastern region of the state). I take it you are back for good, then. I miss Japan and have played with the idea of moving back there from time to time, but I just got tenure where I work (Lycoming College) a year ago so I think we are settled now. Despite the amount of Japanese TV my wife watches (a lot), she prefers to live here anyway. What are you up to in Delaware? A former student of mine was in grad school there and liked it. Regards, Len

Hi Randall, you don't know me--I remembered your posts on various topics and that you lived in Japan, and I think I just saw you on Japanese TV (my wife is from Tokyo and watches TV Japan here in Pennsylvania). Were you on a show called Tokuhou Frontier on NHK? Visiting an instrument repairman? Just curious. I spent several years in Tokyo a long time ago and maintain connections there. Regards, Len Cagle

Thanks for the reply. Ive been looking into getting a new mouthpiece seeing that Im getting this OS alto. I think Im going to wait until the alto comes to see what Im dealing with before I buy a piece. I have a Meyer HR 7M that I was using on my CB BBGS alto which I enjoyed. The mouthpiece had a nice kind of edge to the sound that I like, but at times I feel that it translated to a thin sound when it ran through my horn, especially up in the upper register. I also had a Beechler Bellite Custom 7. Technically I still have it, but Ive sold it to an SOTW member from whom Im waiting for a payment. But for the most part, Im definitely going to see what Im dealing with when my horn comes. Ive had a little experience with Runyons and theyve all been pretty good. The spoiler idea is pretty cool, and I look forward to maybe trying one out. Any tip openings you might suggest? I was thinking around a 7 or 8.

Mahalo for your help. Looking forward to joining the OS crew. haha!

    Hey Randall!

I was wondering, what kind of mouthpiece did you use with your OS copper tenor?

    Hello Randall,

My official title is I&E Mechanic. We do the work of two crafts combined; instrumentation and electricity. An experienced I&E makes between 35 and 50 dollars an hour. Most of the guys I work with did nukes in the Navy. I was in the Army as an MP. I went to a technical school for a two year degree in Computer Technology and Electricity. I was in the Aerospace Industry as an Electronics Technician before getting laid off. Many companies have fled California to go to more business friendly states. The nuclear power industry is expected to follow Europe's lead and grow very soon. The majority of the electric power in Europe is generated by nuclear power plants.
  8. Eric,
Thanks for the note...I will try the horn out in about 3 hours..I am looking forward to getting home today!
    Different topic..
I have long wanted to work in the nuclear power industry....actually took the MASS/POSS test about a year ago at the Salem NJ nuke plant testing center. Math section threw me for a loop and I didn't pass that one part, but passed the other 4 sections. Seems they say I qualify for mechanical and electrical maintenance related jobs.
Wondering what kind of jobs are available in that category and what kind of pay to expect? My cousin worked in chemistry at that plant for more than 20 years and now has moved into planning...

What do you do? Were you in the military prior to working in the nuke industry?

That's great news. It had a long trip. Curious to know what vibe you get from the horn. All the best.

  10. Hi Eric,
Just arrived last night and looks good. I will give it a blow today. Horn seems to be sealing well as the pads all pop well. Can't wait to give it a try.

    Thanks again Eric!
