Does anyone here play Kaval?
I promised myself that I wouldn't get into another woodwind having enough on my plate already, however there's one being sold locally for cheap and I've been intrigued with the tone of this instrument for some time.
What should I be aware of?

Here are the pics:

Well I haven't bought it yet. If everyone tells me that it's very difficult to learn and that it takes years to get a decent tone, then I'll forget about it.

Iíve tried to play Tunisian Ney and Egyptian Kavala (different from Kaval) , the embouchure is similar. It is hard but they have a nice sound. I think you could get into avery beautiful instrument and the trip into this kind of ethnic music might be very beneficiary to your other woodwinds playing in terms of exploring different scales.

Well I waited too long and now it's sold....just as well, I don't know where I would have found the time to learn it.

Does anyone here know what is the small 5 hole flute that Dave Liebman plays on some exotic ballads and introductions with a eastern minor mode? I am intrigued a lot with this since it brings a lamenting pleading tone I love yet very sweet?

It appears not to be a Ney or Kaval and is described on many sites as an Indian bamboo flute (whatever that means)

It's just that: a small 5 hole flute. He used it on a gig I did with him. Very few notes available on that little horn, but it did sound sweet.
About the Kaval; that is seriously hard to play well.

A piece for inspiration from my part of the world. The kaval player is really good one but also all of them.
