If you know what it looks like, you can go to a place like Pier One imports and buy a lifetime supply for about $5. They sell it as a decorative dried plant, but I forget what they call it.

You may also be able to find it growing in swampy areas and pick it yourself for free.

Sandpaper, (400 - 600 grit), does exactly what dutch rush does, and it's easier to find.

Dutch rush
Supposedly Dutch Rush works better than sandpaper because it opens up the pores of the cane whereas sandpaper will close up the pores. I live in Western Oregon where I find the stuff all over the place, always near water, on river banks. They don't call it Dutch Rush here though, it's called horsestail, same thing. I used to pull it and dry it in the oven then use it to work my reeds. I'm back to using BARI synthetic reeds now though.
Hey, I wonder if I could make my fortune by picking the stuff and selling it to reed players?

Make sure you use waterproof sandpaper (the black kind) if you go the sandpaper route, otherwise you'll wind up with a mouthful of.......sand.
