Quartet Piece

I wrote this about 1 year ago I wanna see some input on it..

I didn't listen to it (I HATE midi), but if you'd like you can send me a copy in either Finale or pdf form (I don't have or use Sibelius). If it looks good I can see if a few friends and I can throw up some mics someday and record it for you.

I guess I should correct myself..This isnt a Quartet piece..I forgot I had 2 altos 2 tenors and 1 Bari part..So its 5 parts that need to be covered.

I run two 4-tets, but one of them has ten members; it can get quite crowded. It would certainly be useful to have a piece in AATTB to alter the format and reduce the number of people sharing a part.

So, I ran through the arrangement using Noteworthy and got the usual electronic sounds not really rersembling saxes at all. If you would be so kind as to e-mail a copy, I will give it a go when we meet up again in September (we closed today for the summer) and get back to you with some feedback.

At the least, it looks like good practice and it could, when the tone is right, be quite an effective piece. I will leave it with you, but look forward to hearing from you.

Nice ideas, I like the motion... I think you should leave more space. Also try to pick one of those several ideas you set up there and to develop it. There are about ten different things in there that I can hear setting up about 3 more minutes worth of music. I would take three of the ideas and make a movement out of each one.

Right now you have a concentrated, non-stop montage of high-intensity ideas and motion. Try to pick one of them and tell a story. Study some Philip Glass, see what he does with four notes over the space of 5 minutes!!

I know Its a bit short..Im only 17 I wrote when I was turning 16 heh I didn't really have time to make it a outstanding piece. But now I do..It takes time for me to write my stuff. Its really basica rhythms to. I try to make something not complex but sound breath taking.

I will work on the piece exstensively.

OK, I broke down and listened to the midi.

It's not bad. I agree with the comments made by Razzy. Listen to Glass' 3rd Symphony if you can get a copy of it. See what he does with so little. Also maybe take a listen to Copland's Appalachian Spring. The entire piece is really based off of one interval.

The thing that I notice young compsers doing (and I only broke myself of this habit a year or two ago), is that they try to do too much. Get an idea (harmonic, ryhtmic, melodic) and play around with it. You'll find that you can stretch one idea for a VERY long time, and other motives seem to come from that. If you use the one idea to write say a five minute piece, then even if the original idea gets obscured a little (or sometimes a lot), it's still there, and this provides a sense of unity within a piece. This is good.

If you want to do some composistion seriously, then listening and studying scores is the best way to go. I could do some comp lessons via email if you want, just let me know. Also might not be a bad idea to get a theory book of some kind.

Anywho, like I said, not a bad starting place. My advice would be to NOT re-work this piece, but start another. Since this one is 'done' then you already know how you want it to sound in your head. If you start fresh, then your chances of writing a better piece increase dramatically.

I already tried to rewrite it...I couldn't lol..I tried to keep something going in some parts of the songs but I couldn't my mind was on the train of thought that it was complete..

This piece isn't finished I just added a quick nice sounding ending to make it sound right. Its quite a unusual sounding piece(atleast to me) It switches styles of music but sounds right.I still haven't thought up of a name yet though..

I need some feedback on this one and any suggestions would help me to finish what I have started.

Your melody is a bit lacking for my tastes.

You've got four instruments, right? Why do they all play the same things? (What I'm saying is that your backgrounds generally have at least three of the saxes playing the same thing (though in harmony) at the same time - why not try some counterpoint?)

All in all though I think it's a much better start than the last piece you posted.
