Default BARI reeds

Does anybody notice any difference between the regular BARI reeds and the BARI * reeds?

Yes. They respond pretty much the same but sound different.
I prefer the * - but that's just my opinion.

Default BARI reeds

The *'s have a more cane like sound! The very worst *'s are better than the average cane reeds! They ALL play!

I'm a long time user of regular BARI's (got my first in 1988) and recently got some stars to try on SAT. I notice the *'s play a little harder than their equivalently sized regular counterpart. Also, I found less low end stability (tendency to warble) using the *'s - particularly on soprano.
