Hey just one guys observation, but noticed many of you are playing wide open tips and using classical hard reeds. Personally one of the reasons I play a 120 is so I can use the softest reed possible for enhanced flexibility and subs??? Just wondering

Two words: altissimo and intonation (at least for me). The bari in particular doesn't like softer reeds.

Sax Cat -
thanks for the reply and good explanation, but I'm actually not referring to your setup, as you are playing an 8. I play a #3 on my 8 Quantum too. I'm really talking to the folks playing .120 or larger tips.
Pretty hard to close them off with any read, so altissimo should be a given. But the intonation point, that still applies. I don't struggle with it on my Berg, but I've read that some do.

I play on harder (4's and 5's) reeds because I often play in R&B bands with 3 or 4 other horns and 1 microphone. With the 5's, the brightness of my setups is tamed and I can project like mad. With the 4's, the setup is incredibly free blowing and can take as much, or as little, as I give. 3.5 play well, but things start to sound a bit brighter than I like, so I've stuck with the 4's.
