Hi everyone,
I have been playing saxophone for the past 5 years in my school. I started playing Bari Sax last year. I play in my school's concert band and jazz band, both of which I play Bari in.

Default Hello From Utah!

Hi Everyone,

My name is David, I'm a 27 year-old stock broker who moon-lights as a saxophonist. I originally started playing clarinet back in 1994, then picked up my first Selmer-Bundy alto in early '95, and have been playing pretty much ever since.

In high school I moved over to Bari, and found myself to be relatively accomplished at it, having played in the high school Jazz Band, All-State Jazz band, and a number of different ensembles through high school including rock, funk, and ska. I also had the privilege of getting to perform with Bill Cosby, Bobby Rodriguez and the HMA Salsa Band, and even the late and great Maynard Ferguson.

After graduation, I attended Northern Arizona University, and studied under Joel DiBartolo and Jonathan Bergeron. After only a year, I moved back to Salt Lake City, and have been playing in a number of bands since.

As far as instrumentation goes, although I primarily play the single-reed instruments I have learned to play other instruments as well. I played trumpet and percussion in a couple concert bands in high school, and started learning to play guitar about 11 years ago. As far as single reeds, I've played all saxophones (save for contra-bass) and clarinets in one form or another.

My present setup is a half-wood vito clarinet with the basic generic mouthpiece. I used to have a great full-wood Buffet Crampon with Ernie Northway custom mouthpiece, but it was stolen in one of my moves. For alto I'm playing my 1978 Selmer Mark VII which I purchased in 1997 with a Meyer 6m mouth piece and Rico Royal 2.5 reeds. A friend actually gave me a tenor which belonged to his Grandfather, a 1953 SML Revision D, which I just recently had re-padded, and the original Silver Plating essentially restored (I'll post pics soon). With that, I have a Brillhardt Eventone mouthpiece and Rico Royal 2.5 reeds as well (I'm hoping to upgrade to the Vandoren V16 T75 soon). I unfortunately haven't been able to finance a bari yet, so I'm still in the market for that, but do have my Yanigasawa metal Mouthpiece, and have loved the Rico Royals for that, as well.

Thanks for your time, and thank you for the establishment of such a thorough site.

Cheers,

The Bubba

Hello Everyone!
My name is James and I've been playing tenor sax in highschool and on my own for the past two years. I'm starting to really get into playing jazz and am loving every second.

Hello to all,

Well... i've been reading the post and it seems i'm one of the few rare 'newbie'. Most peeps i've read the intro seem to have 5+ years. Well, I picked-up an alto and tenor sax, wasn't sure which one i wanted so figure i'd give them both a shot. I alternate between the two of them in my semi daily practice. I don't think it should slow me down... what do u think?

What's up all. New to saxophone but not new to music. Nice to be here with a solid community!

Hello y'all, I've seen this site a few times and thought "why not, I'll join".

I'm Gabriel, and I'm seeking a Bachelor's Degree of Music in Performance (worded right?) at my state university. I started playing in 6th grade, on alto sax, and kept playing alto until 10th grade, when I switched to tenor sax as my main sax. A year later, I was chosen to play Bari for my high school's Advanced Jazz Band, and loved both years I was able to do that. I have my own tenor sax now, and I plan on getting my own Bari as well, since I was playing on school instruments throughout most of high school.

I've been playing for about 7.5 years now, and I hope I can make a living off of this passion of mine . I enjoy playing Jazz, and to a lesser extent, the concert stuff, and have recently played some nifty Latin music. I've played a little Ska for the first time, and quite enjoyed it.

I'll probably be asking about techniques you can do on sax, since I haven't really learned many of them. Hopefully I'm not too noob-tastic...

Lots of great information here. I just got back to playing saxophone about a year ago after more than 30 years away. It's fun, but I'd forgotten or never known how much of a challenge it is to play with a decent tone and intonation.

Hello,

I've only ever played Baritone, moved over from Bass Clarinet 18 years ago. Been playing off and on since then, sometimes taking it very seriously, other times putting it down for months or years. I just started playing again about 6 weeks ago after a break of 4 years or so, my longest break.

Listened to a lot of jazz, but sadly for me while I appreciate jazz players, it never sticks for me, and I always end up listening to (usually saxless) rock. This leaves a big disconnect between what I listen to, and what I play, and makes it harder for me to find good situations to play in. But I do love the sax, especially the baritone.

Hello
I've been messing around with a tenor for 20 years more recently switched to Alto and started Jazz lessons which has rejuvenated my interest and enjoyment, so much to learn!
