Saxophonist Cory Barnfield has just released his solo CD "journey" which is now available on his website www.corybarnfield.com. It features Krista Wallace-Boaz on piano and a premiere chamber recording by Perry Goldstein for bassoon, clarinet, alto sax and piano written for Cory. You can find out more on his website with music excerpts. The official release on New Dynamic Records is January 11, but you can get the CD now from his website.

This one's been a long time coming...

    Lutz Koppetsch
"Made in Germany" (Alto Saxophone and Piano)
    Spektral DDD 1302
    --Hindemith: Sonate, Op. 11
    --Hummel: Sonata Brevis
    --Dressel: Sonate, Op. 26
    --Eisler: Orchestersuite No. 2
    http://www.lutzkoppetsch.de/en/recordings

A wonderful young artist finally releases his solo CD. He's played/studied with some of the most esteemed saxophonists in Europe, including Arno Bornkamp, Vincent David, and Daniel Gauthier (when is he going to release another solo CD, by the way...)

    Thanks!

Two more good ones out there:

    Thomas Walsh
"Intersections" (Alto/Soprano Saxophone and Piano or Saxophone Quartet)
    University of Arizona Recordings
    --Lunde: Sonata
    --Boutry: Divertimento
    --Morosco: Blue Caprice
    --Noda: Mai
    --Muczynski: Sonata
    etc.
    http://www.arizonarecordings.com/sax...#intersections

The other half of the dynamic saxophone professor duo at IU finally follows-up his wonderful CD on the RIAX label, "Shaking the Pumpkin"...over ten years later. It's about time!

    Miha Rogina
"Sphénogrammes" (Alto/Soprano/Tenor Saxophone and Piano or Chamber Ensemble)
    CNSMDP CREC-audio08/064
    --Hindemith: Trio, Op. 47
    --Villa-Lobos: Sextuor Mistico
    --Webern: Quatuor, Op. 42
    --Lazar: Zakotne Pesmi
    --Mayazumi: Sphenogrammesetc.
    http://www.miharogina.com/EngDiscography.html

Perhaps the first commercially available recording from this Dinant 2010 finalist? I've been trying to purchase this CD since I saw it on M. Rogina's website two or so weeks ago. Thought I'd mention it here in the hopes that someone else has better luck than me so far...If you do, could you let the rest of us know an internet source for this CD from this truly phenomenal young artist?

I got mine direct from Miha several months ago. I'd recommend contacting him to purchase this CD. CNSMDP Jeunes Solistes CDs have a history of going out of print almost immediately (Vincent David, Jerome Laran, Quatuor Axone et al), so hurry if you want this one.

Oasis Quartet's eponymous debut CD is now available through Innova Recordings.

Works include Nathan Nabb's beautiful arrangement of Philip Glass's String Quartet No. 3 "Mishima," Thierry Escaich's Le Bal, and Ida Gotkovsky's Quatuor.

Three new releases at the very end of 2010:

    Eugene Rousseau
"Eugene Rousseau and Friends" (Alto Saxophone with various chamber ensembles)
    Jeanne CD2274
--Bach: Air from Orchestral Suite No. 3
    --Feld: Quintet
    --Hindemith: Konzertstuck
    --Dubois: Les Trois Mosquetaires
    --Milhaud: Le Creation du Monde

    Eugene Rousseau
"Saxophone Concertos (with the University of North Texas Symphony Orchestra)" (Alto/Soprano Saxophone with Orchestra)
    Jeanne CD2275
--Larsen: Song Concerto for Saxophone and Chamber Orchestra
--Baker: Lamentations Alto/Soprano Saxophones and Orchestra
--Tomasi: Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra

    Both CDs available here: http://www.jeanne-inc.com/Merchant2/...gory_Code=WN-R

Maestro Rousseau has been very busy lately! But even with these two CDs (and the other one earlier this year), I believe his Jeanne, Inc. label still plans to release yet another in 2011. Haven't had a chance to preview these latest recordings, but Professor Rousseau, 78 years young, continues to deliver strong, meaningful performances. No doubt these are two more.

    Holly Gaines
"Traen'skrip fens (Transcriptions)" Alto/Soprano Saxophone with Piano or Organ
    Weston Sound
    --Schumann: Three Romances
    --Debussy: Syrinx
    --Finzi: Five Bagatelles
    --Marcello: Concerto in A Minor
    --(etc.)
    http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/gainesfrenchduo1

Perhaps it's because I've been listening to a lot of CDs featuring contemporary pieces lately, but this little gem was like a breath of fresh air. Simple transcriptions all, but played with a lovely, liquid tone and given nuanced readings by a duo that obviously enjoys playing together. Holly Gaines and pianist John French are colleagues on the music faculty at Ursinus College; how lucky for the music-loving community there.

    Happy New Year, everyone!

Otis Murphy strikes again! A new CD from this amazing artist:

    --Mozart: Oboe Quartet
--Molinelli: Four Pictures from New York
    --Muczyniski: Sonata
    --Waignein: Two Movements
    http://www.saxophoneclassics.com/hom...how&ref=CC4004

    and...

    Sarah Markham
"Run, Sing, Fly" (Alto Saxophone and Piano)
    Saxophone Classics CC4005
    --Yoshimatsu: Fuzzy Bird Sonata
    --Maurice: Tableaux de Provence
--Dubois: Pièces Caractéristiques en Forme de Suite
    --Rae: Sonata
    --Bennett: Three Piece Suite
    http://www.saxophoneclassics.com/hom...how&ref=CC4005

Sarah Markham isn't as big a name as Otis Murphy on the classical saxophone stage, but you'll be gratified that there's yet another wonderful talent in our community. You should also listen to her solo recordings on the Prologue label:

The "James Rae Sonatinas" CD is terrific. Not only does Ms. Markham shine, I found James Rae's pieces to be wonderfully melodic and accessible---in the best sense of that term.

    Thanks!

    New Delangle CD!

    This one looks fascinating!

    Claude Delangle
"Harmonious Breath" Soprano/Alto Saxophone and Orchestra
    BIS (?)
    --Chung: Saxophone Concerto #1
    --Chung: Saxophone Concerto #2
    --Tian: Open Secret
    --(Traditional): Chinese Melodies
    http://www.naxosdirect.se/-Delangle-...le/BIS%201790/

So new that this website sent me a "Regret to inform you..." email saying they wouldn't accept payment for a pre-order. Oh, well, just need to be patient until this CD gets to other internet vendors.

Since I haven't listened to this recording yet, I'll just paste a description of the program from the liner notes:

"(Claude Delangle) and the Taipei Chinese Orchestra, an ensemble of some 50 musicians, playing traditional Chinese instruments such as erhu, pipa, suona, bronze bells and many others. The programme includes two saxophone concertos by the prominent Taiwanese composer Yiu-Kwong Chung (b.1956), as well as Open Secret, a work composed for Claude Delangle and the orchestra by the young composer Leilei Tian (b. 1971). But besides these original compositions there are also arrangements of two traditional Chinese pieces, which in Claude Delangle's own words formed a musical entryway for him 'into the great tradition of Chinese music'. This is the second disc in a collaboration between BIS and Taipei Chinese Orchestra, following Whirling Dance - a disc which received praise both for the repertoire ('one cannot avoid being pulled in by the magic of this music', klassik-heute.de) and the performances by the soloist Sharon Beazly and the orchestra, described in Classic FM Magazine as 'a joyful discovery, evoking delicate playfulness, high drama, or the tranquillity of a misty Chinese valley with equal atmosphere.'"

A new CD from a genuine legend as an artist and pedagogue...

    Frederick Hemke
"Fascinating Rhythm" (Alto Saxophone and String Quartet)
    EnF Records
    (All Gershwin):
    --Prelude I, II, III
    --Porgy and Bess
    --A Foggy Day
    --Embraceable You
    --I Got Rhythm
    --Fascinating Rhythm
    (etc.)

    http://www.fredericklhemke.com/home.htm

Hard to classify this recording...Gershwin standards interpreted with saxophone and a string quartet. But it's hard not to buy this CD: the new arrangements of these chestnuts by Jonah Blum are fresh and evocative and who can pass up adding another Frederick Hemke recording to their collection? I couldn't!
