Oops, sorry, seems the link is not complete.
After choosing a language, just type "Sugawa" in the "Quick search" box.

That Wytko is definitely a digitalization of his LP of the same name.

Thanks for the Forshaw update. I love his playing and what he does with Sanctuary, and am curious as to his interpretation of traditional recital stuff.

Daniel Gauthier informed me that the Alliage Quintet's new CD "Masquerade" will come out next month in Europe. He wasn't specific on what was gonna be on it but does it really matter?

Gauthier told me months ago that they were planning on recording Wijnand van Klaveren's arrangement of Rimsky-Korsakov "Scheherazade" for SQ/piano.

    I agree, it doesn't matter what they're playing, they're f'ing unbelievable.

(but I'd love to hear that Scheherazade......Gauthier playing the violin solos......)

    Hello, all.

This may be a little early for your holiday shopping season, but the Indianapolis Saxophone Quartet released a CD of Christmas music last year. I think it came out pretty well, and hope you get a chance to check it out!

    Thanks,

    Karl

Hello, everyone. Three new releases you may be interested in (a few more to follow shortly):

    Kazuyuki Hayashida
"Lessons of the Sky" (Alto/Soprano Saxophone with Piano)
    Cafua CACG-0120
    --Rogers: Lessons of the Sky
    --Creston: Sonata
    --Dobbins: Sonata
--Dobbins: Echoes of a Distant Land
    --Kitakata: Time
    --Peck: Drastic Measures
    http://www.cafua.com/

A member of Masato Kumoi's saxophone quartet. Hard to describe exactly, but seems to play slightly "outside" the usual interpretations of the Rogers, Dobbins, and, especially, the Creston. Very compelling work. The "bonus" is his own quartet's version of Peck's spectacular "Drastic Measures".

    Jerome Laran
"Impressions d' Automne" (Alto/Soprano Saxophone and Piano)
    Cafua CACG-0119
    --Debussy: Rhapsodie
    --Ravel: Sonatine
    --Milhaud: Scaramouche
    --Desenclos: Prelude, Cadence et Finale
    --Poulenc: Trio
    --Leroux: SPP
    --Caplet: Impressions d' Automne
    http://www.cafua.com/

Yet another young French virtuoso out of the Paris Conservatoire. Standard readings of the standards...which isn't really a criticism; but, certainly, the most exciting piece here is Leroux's edgy and memorable "SPP". This CD also features Hiroshi Hara on tenor saxophone for the Poulenc piece. I'll take any opportunity to hear him play!

    Jeffrey Wilson
"Semplice: From Beautiful Beginnings..." (Soprano/Alto/Tenor Saxophone with Piano)
    Saxophone Classics CS 4001
    --Tchaikovsky: Chason Triste
    --Rachmaninov: Romance
    --Heath: Gentle Dreams
    --Scott: Tango
    --Gurewich: Czardas
    --Faure: Apres un Reve
    --Naulais: Coconotes
    --Crepin: Celine Mandarine
    etc.
    http://saxophoneclassics.com/

An extensive collection of "miniature" pieces. All very melodic and appealing. Jeffrey Wilson simply has to play them with a gorgeous tone and with an expressive, vocal quality---which he does. BTW, there is a very exciting mention by Stephen Cottrell in the liner notes of this recording: apparently, this label plans to release recordings of past masters including Mule, Deffayet, and Rascher! Can't wait for that to happen!

    Thanks and happy listening!

The Prazak String quartet has released a CD including, among other pieces, the Quintet for Saxophone and String quartet by Feld.

According to the French magazine "Le Monde de la Musique" (September issue), the saxo part is played by Raaf Hekkema, although I did not find any word about it on his website.

A brand new one to report:

    Brian Horner
"Serenade: Music for Saxophone and Piano" (Alto Saxophone and Piano)
    Sound Artist Records 36473
    (All by M. Zachary Johnson)
--Adagio for Alto Saxophone and Piano
    --Serenade for Solo Saxophone
--Scherzo for Alto Saxophone and Piano
--Grand Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano
    --Solitude (for Solo Piano)
    http://cdbaby.com/cd/horneravery

The same duo recorded many of these pieces in a "live" CD at Steinway Hall. This CD, recorded sans audience, loses none of the excitement of the earlier CD. M. Zachary Johnson's music is immediately intriguing and refreshing if only because it is so unabashedly tonal and romantic. But accessible, in this case, doesn't mean simplistic; the harmonies and rhythms show careful craftsmanship. The "old" is new again!

    Thanks!
