Default Need a pie chart of how to budget your income

Don't ask me why this is in the "Misc. Saxophone Discussion" area. Didn't seem to fit anywhere. Anyway -

I am trying to put to together a reasonable personal budget. Moving has cost me dearly and in some ways I'm having to start all over again. I have read and heard about suggestions that a person should apportion X% of their income to housing, X% to transportation, X% to whatever.

I'm trying to find such info and a pie chart's pretty clear and easy to visualise. I am sure such a chart exists but I sure as heck can't find it anyplace.

The only thing I've found is a chart on average spending patterns in America. Considering the sad state of so many personal finances, I'm not really interested in what the average spending really is, rather what it should be.

Can any of my SOTW brothers and sisters point me in the right direction? Thanks. Gary

It's not a pie chart, but it lets you get into some level of detail in different areas, and at the bottom of each section, there's a recommended percentage of your income.

I'm not really a fan of Dave Ramsey, but he knows how to advise on a household budget. Follow his advice and he'll get you out of the woods in a big, painful hurry.

    Gary -

Not in chart form, but I found this. It's very straightforward.

    Sweet potato - 15%
    Lemon meringue - 10%
    Shoo-fly - 20%
    Mince-meat - 5%
    Boston cream - 20%
    Strawberry - 5%
    Rhubarb - 10%
    Key lime - 15%

Of course it may vary a bit by season.

Thanks, guys (some more than others ).

Frank, those goals are what I was looking for and CooolJazzz, your link breaks it down so that I can relate it to what Frank provided.

FWIW, I don't need to dig myself out of debt. I'm actually in a very flexible position, staying with my mom and sis at the moment - rent free and with two autos at my disposal, and very little personal debt. I have a chance to "start over" and I want to do it right. No need looking for $800.00 apartments in Austin if I should only be spending $600.00 or buying a $20,000 car if I should only be buying one for $9,000. That sort of thing.

His "debt-free!!!!!" approach is very nice for impending retirement planning. If you start off low key and stay that way...

I've never been to his site or seminars, but his radio show is pretty decent.

I've been to one of his Seminars, and I used to listen to his radio show alot now their is not enough time to.
But his approach works, so I'm gonna stick with it...

I don't even know how to start answering this.

    For me it's:

Ask Ms. hakukani how much money we have.
Ask Ms. hakukani if I can buy anything.

+ 1 on that!!! Only with me it is Mrs. Elliott. With her track record of refusal, Hak, could I possibly ask Ms. Hak about future purchases?

It must be nice to have enough income to budget outside of survival mode.
I'm looking forward to the day when I can revive the savings account.

Why ask if you can buy anything. Any husband already knows the answer.
