Hey SOTW!

New member here... Played alto and bari all through middle, high school and college, and then life got into the way, and I stopped playing. Recently a new mom to an awesome little girl.

Just had a birthday and my husband bought me a new Tenor saxophone. I haven't played much tenor (played 1 year in jazz band when needed). Its nothing great, but it plays! Looking forward to getting my chops back. I haven't played in about 6 years, and today I got my new horn. I remembered how to play! And I didn't sound too bad!

Love the forum, and very happy to see a place where great sax players can share great information!

Re: SOTW new member introductions Q3 2008

Hello folks,

Found this website a few weeks back. Has lots of great information for all levels of players.

As for myself, I have been playing saxophone for about 14 yrs (started in 6th grade and have been playing ever since). I play mainly in a college big band, but have also done some classical band playing as well, although not recently.

My current set up is a Yamaha 62 Tenor with a Link STM metal jazz mpc, but I am getting ready to try out a JJ DV piece soon. In the future I would like to add some horns to my collection, mainly the 3 I don't have .

Re: SOTW new member introductions Q3 2008

Hello! I'm Amy and I've been lurking around for about a year. I returned to the sax (tenor) after 8 inexplicable and empty years away from it. I was going to sell it, but came to my senses. I now play in a community concert band and a sax chamber ensemble that varies in size. I am a classical player - jazz has always eluded me but I love to listen to it.

This site has been so helpful during my "rehabilitation" - lots of great info and reminders. I wish it had been around back when I was first starting to play seriously!

Thanks and take care,
Amy

Hi Folks,
I just found this site inadvertantly trying to post a question on behalf of my pre-teen son. I don't play saxophone myself, though I can play guitar and a little bit of keyboards.

Here goes: My boy has been playing trumpet going on three years now, and now he wants to play alto sax. He wants to play both, with the thought of eventually dropping trumpet to concentrate solely on sax. BUT, for the next few years, he will most likely continue to play both. Since he is so young and is still growing, are there any concerns that playing both instruments will cause any damage to his mouth, teeth, lips, lungs, etc? Hopefully this doesn't sound too stupid, but I really am asking this question seriously.

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve and welcome.

It is probably best to concentrate on one instrument at a time, that said general "musicianship" will develop pretty much regardless of the instrument and there are plenty of people who get more satisfaction (and more gigs) from doubling.

I think an important point for youngsters is maintaining momentum on their musical journey and if that means an occasional switch of instruments then in my book so be it. If he sticks with sax he will surely eventually want to dabble with others of that family, sop, alto, tenor or bari etc.

I doubt there would be any physical limitations with playing both. I played brasswinds in school and can recall my teeth feeling loose after an all day blow of a few occasions, sax never gives me such issues, although 30 years on of course my growing is now long finished (except for around the waist that is).

Hey, I live in Greece, but I am from Canada. Play alto saxophone, Ive been playing for about five years, and Im 17 right now.

^^As for the question above, I actually played trumpet for two years before picking up Saxophone. I dropped trumpet when I started saxophone. As for the question you have, I know Im young and dont have as much experience as some others but I really dont think there will be any problem, I never had any. I even have braces right now :-( and it doesnt affect me at all.

Hi There, I am a born again sax player, after 25 years absence due to family commitments. Perhaps Im a bit past it at 56, but I have always yearned to rekindle my once then passion.
I sold my Selmer Tenor, Beucher artisacrat alto and B+H Emperor clarinet when the kids were small to pay the bills. Sad eh!!
So I Finally decided to buy myself a yam pro 62 tenor and have just upgraded the mouthpiece to otto link 6*. Fantastic!!!
Its my turn now the kids are ok and I am really enjoying the buz. Im a bit rusty but what the heck.
Cheers SOTW for loads of info and bags of inspiration.

Hey SOTW,

My name is Joel Sana and i am a high school senior. I have been playing the Tenor for about 5 years working on my sixth year now. I was always looking for a way to find new riffs and have sax chitchat with people who know a thing or two about blowing on a horn. ^_^

This forum rocks,

Howdy! I am Katie and just started learning tenor this past January. I play piano (badly) and flute, but sax is by far the most fun so far. I was given a 1926 Buescher...plays beautifully. I have a very cool teacher who is in his 70s and has played with a lot of small combos, jazz bands and municipal bands. I look forward to learning from you masters!!

Hi there happy honkers,

My name's Frank and I live in Belgium. I recently bought (last July) a YAS 62 C and combined it with a Selmer C* mouthpiece.
The only experience I had on sax' before was the Jupiter my son had from the academy. As he stopped his sax lessons we had to return the horn and so I decided to buy the one mentioned above. I'm very pleased with the sound and handling.
I never played sax before and started to practice on my own. Since September I take lessons by a real teacher and wow what a relevation.
My music history before was accordeon and bass guitar. Now I'm already 22 years in a Blues/Blues rock Band and play the mississipi saxophone since.
Finally I decided to get on, on the real thing ;)
Since I bought the mighty horn I practice 1 - 3 hours daily. Could it be I'm addicted?

That's a little about my humble self,

Keep on Honking,

Frank

Hi everyone,

i just discovered this site when i was looking for some sheet music... It looks just awesome!

I live in Belgium and started playing saxophone in september. I played the clarinet for three years when I was a kid, but I stopped playing because I didn't like the teacher much. But then I missed playing music to much and decide to start again, this time with alt sax. The teacher I have now is just great, so I thing i'll be playing a long time

Next to playing sax, I like reading, especially young adult novels. I'm a great fan of Philip Pullman, Aidan Chambers, Floortje Zwigtman and many more... Lucky for me, I work in the childrens department of a public library. I get to be creative and work with children and children's books, which is just great!

I'm looking forward to talk to other sax players and to find greet sheet music...

Hi everybody! I played alto sax all the way through school and then after college for a short time at a church I was attending. I was just beginning the make a transition i had been looking for between playing only from sheet music to playing by ear and making the sax play what I wanted, how I wanted. Life changed and I am just picking up my alto again after 15 years!

I promised myself way back then that if I ever started playing again that I would upgrade to a pro-level sax. All those years I played on a Armstrong student horn. I'm still amazed that my college jazz instructor never made me upgrade. But now it's time and I've started looking. And I'm excited about that! And about playing again! Anybody know of a good saxophone shop in the minneapolis area?

I was on the old forum and have recently come back to shop for a new tenor.

I'm a trumpet player and high school music teacher. I bought an SX90R/Morgan 8M rig back in 2000 in order to connect better with my woodwind students (I ended up playing it more than my trumpet for awhile and even gigged a bit on it!) but had to sell it (along with my flugelhorn and clarinet) when my son became very ill and finances were tight.

Things are better now financially, my son is completely well (soon to join the Marines!), and I'm in the market for another tenor. I can't afford another JK at this point, and even if I could, I'm not sure I want to go back to that unique sound. If all I was going to do is R & B and that sort of thing, I might hunt for a used SX90 (the sound is HUGE) but I think I'm headed more toward a more subtle, intimate approach--a ballads-with-a-quartet kind of vibe.

Another part of my story is a year in band instrument repair school (Western Iowa Tech) and an ever-growing passion for fine craftsmanship of every kind. It will be hard for me to buy a sax with the sound I'm after if the workmanship isn't perfect. I've rebuilt an almost totally destroyed sax and gotten it playing well--leak free, so I know what I'm looking for in terms of build quality. When you've done a complete restoration yourself, even if only as a school project, you look at a sax from a different perspective.

Many people are telling me that the Yanagisawa is the sax with the best craftsmanship. I'm all ears if somebody thinks otherwise because at this point I'm leaning toward a T-991 with a Link or short shank Soloist.

Hello,
I'm a freshman in college, majoring in Music Education. I play sax and a very little bit of flute. I've been lurking here for a little while and I've already learned so much. This forum is definitely one of the most valuable resources for sax players on the 'net. Hopefully one day I'll be able to contribute. :D

Hello, I'm a senior in high school, and thinking of majoring in music (probably music performance, but not sure yet). I've been playing the alto sax for about 6 years and right now I play for my high school wind ensemble and jazz band.
I play on a Selmer and my mouthpiece is a Meyer 5. Yes, basic set. And I'm still looking for the perfect reed, but now I'm sticking with a Vandoren java or a V16.

As a student, I'm hoping that I'll be able to become a better musician by a little help from SOTW :)

Hi,
I'm also a newcomer to the site (I have browsed it before). Like so many, I returned to playing fairly recently (about 2 yrs ago) after a long dormancy...really 30 yrs or so! Was recruited by sheer luck by a local big band, playing Alto 1, soprano and clarinet...enjoying it immensely. Oddly enough, I never played much swing or jazz, just "classical" style, in which I was trained at university. So this is fun. I play a Mk VI alto, with my original Brillhart mouthpiece (I have a separate one, crafted from a Selmer, for classical) and a cheapo Chinese-made soprano (with a Yamaha mouthpiece worth a lot more than the horn!). If you can control it, the $150 soprano is a true find; I can just about keep it in tune through the range! Recently discovered Vandoren ZZ reeds.

Also playing soprano in a new quartet, which is where I feel most at home.

Looking forward to reading and taking part in this.

Hello all,
I'm a new member. I wanted to use Chip'n Dale as my user name but it was taken. I wanted that because my name is Dale and one of my hobbies is collecting casino chips ... makes sense right ?
Grad. Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and have been at this Sax playing for 35 years now. I wouldn't call what I did before college good playing.

Hello!

My name is Bastiaan, I'm 23 years old and I live in Holland, Europe. I've been playing the saxophone for about fifteen years now, mostly alto, but lately I've been sort of collecting saxophones... Sure you know how addicting that is :). Currently filling my room:

- Conn New Wonder I Sopranino from 1926
- SML Rev. D Soprano from 195x
- Selmer SA80II Alto from 2003
- SML Rev. D. Alto from 195x
- Kohlert 57 Tenor from 1957
- Kohlert 58 Tenor (stencil) from 1958
- SML Rev. D Baritone from 196x
(- Conn Bass Clarinet, about 50 years old)

Hope to learn more about the Kohlerts here, I'll try to repad them myself.

Best regards!
Bastiaan

Good evening,

I study from Connie Frigo at The University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee and friends of mine have preached the advantages that posting on this forum offers, so I decided to grab a rung and climb aboard! I look forward to reaping all of the great benefits that the knowledgeable members of the forum afford to those who know how to find them...

Cheers,

Hello SOTW and fellow saxophoners, :)

My name is Stephanie and I am a high school student. I have been playing alto sax for a little over five years and started really getting into it last summer. I love music and I plan on going to college to study music and make a career with my saxophone.
I often visit this site to find answers to many of my questions and just figured it was about time I joined. This is definitely my favorite place to find answers.

Stay cool my friends,
Steph :nike:
