I know he plays flute on "Ascension". I don't know of any other than that.

In one of the bios I read, Dolphy's Mom gave him Eric's flute.

He played Flute on Expression (Impulse !) which I believe was the last album released in his lifetime, the track is called To Be .
That album is well worth hearing - its with his later Band w Alice Coltrane .
One guy that was in part inspired by that record was Lennie Pickett and it was him who made me go and check it out - people need to go and listen to later Coltrane - I mean he didnt go mad he was just going on to the next step , thats all.

I love late Coltrane. It so unlike any other music.

Didn't he record a few tracks on alto on his Live In Japan recordings?

I have a few bios of Trane and I remember one stated that he would practice the flute when he was too tired out to blow anymore tenor. After his 12ish hours of tenor he would relax with some flute...something to that effect. Too bad my memory isn't better in remembering the bio.

Yes, there are some tracks with Coltrane playing alto on Live In Japan. The one that comes to mind is one of the two versions of Peace On Earth.

That reminded me of this thread:

Thanks, I will look and see if I have a vinyl version of this, I probably do, and will definitely give it a listen.

The first time I heard Ascension it was like a religious experience. I didn't know he played flute on that, too cool.

The flute in this picture is a C foot isn't it? The description in the Dolphy flute thread says Dolphy's was a B foot.

There is in fact, no flute playing to be heard anywhere on the "Accension" album. But Trane did play Dolphy's flute on the "Expression" album. The flute playing heard there is far from being in the virtuoso category, as Trane had not seriously studied the flute. He seems to deploy the flute as a color or effect. Pharoah also noodles on flute or piccolo on that same track. Perhaps if Trane had lived longer, he would have gotten more into the flute. It is an instrument that takes many years to master.
That late period Trane music is very interesting. "Interstellar Space" was an incredible final statement by J.C.
