A very sad loss ...I envy you Hak, your a very luck man to have got to study under and spend time with such a prolific educator.
May he rest in peace knowing his work will be with us forever.
When I started playing jazz in the 70ies, Baker's books were about the only written material you could get here in Switzerland. I owe the man a lot. And I love his trombone playing on George Russel's "Ezzhetics". It seems he was playing with a broken jaw!
Over the years I've come to understand that mentorship is absolutely crucial in the calling of music. The outpouring of tributes I'm seeing online to David Baker is truly remarkable in that respect. His influence is as wide as it is deep.
David Baker passed away. Born in 1931, he wrote 70 books and performed on 65 recordings. He was a leading educator, author, musician and jazz proponent for many years.
David Baker was a great teacher & player. He taught me a lot at an Aebersold "camp".
I used to see him with George Russell's band in Birdland when he still played trombone.
RIP Mr. Baker! Thank you.
