Amsterdam Recommendations?? Jazz gigs/Sax shops??

I'm in Amsterdam for a few days in July and was wondering if anyone could recommend where to go to see some good jazz? Also are there any good sax shops worth visiting?? Thanks.

you can find all sorts of smaller places although in July some places are winding down for the Summer

Shops:

Amsterdam Winds (the only real saxophone shop in town and one of the few repair shops but there are other technicians.......Frits de Wit, Nico Bodewes....)

Hampe and Berkel (they have some vintage woodwinds)

Thanks for the tips. I'm not particularly bothered about seeing big names. It would be nice to hear some of the top local guys though. Peter Beets or Simon Rigter or players in that bop/straight ahead vein.

the shop where you will find the most vintage horns around Amsterdam would probably be Harry Bakker (not cheap stuff mind you!) f you are prepared to travel almost to Belgium Music Centre van Gorp has the largest collection (392 pieces at the moment .........not all very special or precious though)

Is the Cafe Alto still operating near the Leidseplein?
Stopped there one night about 2 am, and the band was great.
On piano was David Berkman.

I just spoke with friends in A'dam, and the Cafe Alto is still very much happening. Saxophonist Hans Dulfer (Candy's dad) is on hand every Wednesday night, and there is music every night.

It's been a while but I played a few gigs there with Burton Greene and Perry Robinson.

Definitely make a stop there. Easy to get to via tram or by foot.

I'm not really ashamed of the coffee shops but I cringe every time I see tourist around the red light district.

Cafe Alto is an excellent place for jazz, great atmosphere. Likewise Matthews muziek in nearby Edam is great for checking out saxophones, new and old, very friendly people.

In summer lots of places observe a Summer stop so you might find that the usually rich atmosphere is somehow less rich. The Bimhuis is open in July as a concert venue but the Tuesday evening jamsession, after the workshop, is closed for the Summer.

It's summer, so sessions may have a summer stop. Many of the foreign students will return home. However, next weekend is the North Sea Jazz Festival (in Rotterdam) so there's lots of jazz happening there, not just at the venue but also in the city itself. http://www.northsearoundtown.com/programma.php
