"The sound of tireless voices is the price we pay for the right to hear the music of our own opinions."
"The sound of tireless voices is the price we pay for the right to hear the music of our own opinions."
without going political.......... a lot of people ( and Nations) in Voltaire’s time or later, believed in isolationism only to find out that whatever you think of yourself you might be painfully reminded of the world around you, whether you like it or not.
The reference to Cincinnatus is of the same nature.
You can get out and stay out of the problems until the problems come seeking you. Then you have two ways to answer one is hiding and wait until it passes away (doesn’t always work) the other one is “ doing the right thing” and play your part.
To be referring to the classical world once again.
the phrase “ Navigare necesse est , vivere non est necesse!” is attributed to Gnaeus Pompeius who was commanding a ship due to bring food to a Roman colony in Africa, a terrible storm arose and the sailors didn’t want to leave.
He commented that Sailing was necessary while living wasn’t.
See this is what I call good conversation.
I think the obvious interpretation of that would be to imply "the Roman fleet is more important than life". So it's a simple (minded) patriotism along the lines of "dulce et decorum est pro patria mori". I think you must be understanding it more broadly though, milandro?
edit: (you'll like this one, Andre): "Fumagalli states that Mussolini, at a conference on aeronautics in Rome in 1923, modified it to volare necesse est etc"
"The sound of tireless voices is the price we pay for the right to hear the music of our own opinions."
I think the interpretation of Navigare est necesse, vivere non est necesse is more something like that the duty towards the things you stand for is more important than anything else and you stick to the given word (or your convictions) regardless of the hurdles.
So......... one could be saying , I don’t care about the world and Isolate himself in the country , tending a garden, but it comes a point in which your sense of service and duty are called upon and you have to act and take responsibility even if you would have been otherwise reluctant to be in the action and the public eye.
True that humans might be caught in the turmoil of the events that are always bigger than us but anyone can mostly (albeit not always) choose the way you face the events. You can hide, you can be supine or you can stand up and be counted (obtorto collo perhaps!)
From Cincinattus to Voltaire to Mussolini... Now one of my favorites from Gen. George S. Patton : "Has it ever occurred to you that dying might be more exciting than living?"
I don’t think we (luckily) mentioned Mussolini anywhere.
The motto “ Navigare Necesse est vivere non est necesse “ was ALSO used by Gabriele d’Annunzio (an Italian Poet and self proclaimed war and regime hero.....) but to my knowledge wasn’t used by Mussolini......although he famously used other people’s saying like: "It is better to live one day as a lion than a hundred years as a sheep.”...........but lots of people who talk of honour have none..........gotta talk the talk , walk the walk .....but do the deeds to back up what you say is more important.
"Facilis descensus Averni"
Certainly apropos when discussing the arc of much discourse here and elsewhere. (This thread being a bit off the charts but - after a minor rocky patch- neither up, down, left, or right, but simply "other".)
Well it was an edit you see as milandro was mid-process.. Editing certainly being a case of "facilis descensus Averni".. Mussolini too..
I'm glad you referenced the second half of that Virgil quote through the Dante, milandro. That is actually quite important.
As Virgil put it:
"Facilis descensus Averni;
Noctes atque dies patet atri ianua Ditis;
Sed revocare gradum superasque evadere ad auras,
Hoc opus, hic labor est."
"The way to Avernus (hell) is easy
Night and day the doors of black Dis stand open.
But to recall one's step and escape into the upper airs:
That is the work. That is the task."
I often think this when opening a thread on SOTW...![]()
"The sound of tireless voices is the price we pay for the right to hear the music of our own opinions."
Vademecum ! Linoleum .......Modulus, Titanium........ora pro nobis!![]()
Amen!
