Maybe looking at the surface with high magnification and high intensity lighting would reveal what's going there. I have a little handheld super magnifier for examining old photographed slides that I use all the time for things like this.

Huh! Didn't see this post until now. I've got a couple of vintage dazor magnifying lamps I use in the shop, but nothing as powerful as what you suggest. Sounds like a great idea, Jorns. Any recommendations on a specific product?
