Does a Mk VI exist in your area for that price? If so, what is it's condition? Is this a realistic comparison or fantasy?

I assume you're talking altos...The VI is probably the better financial decision. The better musical decision cannot be determined until you try out the two examples for yourself.

For Sale: 1957 Mark VI alto
Good modern altos are better than most MkVIs (altos) if playing music is your priority. I'm not speaking of all other collector, historical or sentimental values they might represent.
Go for a used Yamy if you can. If one day you stumble over an irresistible MkVI (but make sure it really is), you'll sell your Yamy almost without loss. And in the meantime, enjoy one of the best altos available.
