Springer Mouthpieces

Was looking for an affordable metal jazz mouthpiece and came across threads on Springer mouthpieces, saw a recent ad for one, went to the Springer site and it looks to be out of commission. Are these guys still in business?

What is a good affordable metal mouthpiece for a neophyte? - I have seen some good reviews on the CE Winds Shocka mpc - also, sizes, would the 11 .100 Shocka be too big, what is a good size to start with?

BTW, I play a 1965 King Cleavland Alto with King mpc - it blows freely and loudly. My son plays jazz (will be getting his cannonball alto next week) and was wondering what would suit this sax as well.

I'm about to enter the rabbit hole !

Check out Runyon. Good, cheap, and very consistent.

The Smoothbore might be worth looking into.

I have a springer HR alto mouthpiece. It's my backup. I hope he gets back to the mouthpiece biz. Nice guy, and good pieces.

If you must have metal for alto, I'd say the beechler bellite is a pretty good choice. .072-.080 are usual tip openings for alto pieces. If you're going for that Sanford sound, a Dukoff D6 or 7 would be a good one. However, the material they're made of is a bit soft, and so fairly easily damaged.

Of course, I recommend a Meyer 6m HR. If you want it perfect, have Phil Englemann work on it.

A .100 is a hell of a tip size for an alto. There are few pro players that go that wide in tip size.

Whoa! I missed that. I thought that I played a big tip at .090! (and I wouldn't recommend it. It just happens to work for me, and I've been playing for 45 years this October).
