Playing Along To Melancholy/Sad/Contemplative Songs

Hi,

As I mentioned in an earlier post I played my sax in church for the first time on Sunday. I played by ear as I can't transpose by eye and I can't get the score early enough to transpose it, plus it is pointless to play the melody, that's why we have singers!

Anyway I found it fine playing along to more upbeat and fasts songs, however the traditional hymns/song types suggested in the title I found were difficult to play along to. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions?

Yes, think of the words of the song, think of what they mean and what they mean to you, as in the Sacrifice made for you, and start playing only to God. Your choice of notes aren't as important as the feeling behind them. And, as always, less is more. Just fill in with appropriate to the song notes- soft and with feeling.

Slip in a few flattened 3rds & 7ths at the right times.....it cannot fail.

I'll try practising this, and working out when to play and when to be quiet!
