Default Moodys mood For Love-Transcription by Tim Price in alto sax key.

This is the classic line. The best solo to learn IMHO if your a sax player playing jazz or anything else. It's melodic and it's great for_YOUR TIME_feel.

    Enjoy- Alto sax key.

Great transcription Tim...I was just thinking about this performance the other day and you're right every jazz saxophonist/jazz musician should learn this solo. This is one of the most melodic solos EVER!!! I think Moody said that this was the 1st take and that he had never played the song before...WOW! Thank you James Moody, what a gift your talents are....

Moody said that this tune gave him "Pocket Mumps" He made a lot of money from the tune. As I remember, someone gave him an alto and said that the tune was I'm in the Mood for Love and the rest is history. He also said that you really don't know a tune until you can play it in all 12 keys. A natural treasure, keep him in your prayers as he has just been diagnosed with cancer.

thanks and what sad news to hear about Moody being diagnosed, you think you get to that age and your free from that stuff.

I thought the funniest thing about this tune is that Moody had to transcribe his own solo later on, so he could play it. He also learned to sing it---in his own inimitable style

Here's the interview with Camille Cosby where James Moody explains how the song came about. It's funny....a classic really, especially when he explains about recording the song on alto and the effect it had on his playing. LOL

    Sorry, unable to display

For me this song is immortal for three reasons. For Moody's solo and playing, for the brilliant lyrics by Eddie Jefferson, and for King Pleasure's classic vocal. In fact, in my mind when I hear Moody play it I hear the lyrics a lot (and vice versa). I guess they're stuck in my head because I have been listening to King Pleasure singing it since back in the days when Symphony Sid played it on his show every night.

Thanks Tim. I learned this solo by ear years ago, but never wrote it down. A student was asking about this solo last week. He will appreciate being able to see this. It's technically over his head, but he will enjoy starting to put the notes together - very slowly.

    Happy Holidays to you!

    Tim,
Many thanks also for this great work. I'm playing bari with the Conservatory Big Band of the neighbouring city (La Chaux-de-Fonds, French speaking part of Switzerland) and I've sent your transcription to a good friend to arrange it "a la" Supersax for the sax section; he had made his own transcription but used yours for fine tuning! We'll use the arrangement for a "band within he band" section of our concerts. It starts with the statement of the original "I'm in the Mood for Love" theme in 8-bar segments by each sax player and then goes on to the harmonization of the transcription. We start working on it two weeks from now and I'll try to send you a record of it as soon it takes shape.
    All the very best,
    Jacques
(Jazz) is a lot of wrong notes...especially people who play jazz saxophone. Spinal Tap. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hH1pw4EMe4g (1:20; 2:05)

Thanks Tim, Man that Richie Cole is something else! I love this guy-- got his stuff on vinyl from way back.Every Alto player and performer should listen to Richie for that great joyful vibe that ALWAYS comes through his music.A lot of folks say he's too flash but I disagree-- he just cant help playin' that way!
Why dont he make more records I'd like to know? You know him Tim does, he still put his 'trademark' low to high 'gliss' in nowadays?--that always kills me! you're just waiting for it every time--like Bostic did with his 'shakes' and 'growls'. If he was a guitar player he'd be World famous.
Some promotion guy should get him and Carter on the same stage! I reckon James might come away just a little humbled! what ya' think!!

I know Richie, we have played a lot on each otheres projects- BEAUTIFUL HUMAN BEING.

I know James Cater and I could imagine a beautiful friendship between both of them...each has their own "special" things and both know the horn from every side. I bet that would be a GREAT combination.

ALSO- Its been a long time since I spoke to Richie- you reminded me. Got to get to him -we had some times

Thanks Tim, I've been shedding your transcription a bunch and have it about 85% committed to memory, playing along with the original (which I happened to find a clean copy of on a Prestige mixed CD that I have, much better than what I hear quality-wise on Youtube). The piano player in my band is interested in playing this and I've been trying to dig up backing sheet music with no luck. I've found a few charts for "I'm in the mood for love", all seem to be in C instead of Db. Any hints?
