It's high time those of us who play classical music on saxophone put our talents on display. There's a very active thread in Misc. Saxophone Discussion where people post clips of themselves - it's one of the busiest areas on this board, other than the buy/sell postings.

I'm starting this thread because I'm personally interested in hearing what other participants in this area sound like.

The only thing that I ask of you is this: if you're going to take part here, be prepared to post. I've got no time for armchair critics.

Here's the first movement of the Albinoni Sonata St. Marc on soprano with piano accompaniment.

A friend and I (17 + 19) recently played some Duos at a competition. The program is really nice but it was probably a little hard for us. Still we had fun playing it.

The Kuhlau recording might be interesting for some people.. because when I looked for a recording I couldn't find anyone.

Feedback is welcome :)

Hindemith - Konzerstück I - III
Kuhlau - Three Concert Duets I
Koch - Birthday Music for Sigurd Rascher III

Thanks awholley!

My quartet has put up two new recordings on our website. The first half of the second movement of the Glass Concerto(Quartet version) and the second is an excerpt from the Quartet by Charles Wuorinen(the last couple of minutes of the piece)

Hope some of you will check it out!

Hey Alphabet Soup:

You're 15? Yeah, man, I'm damn impressed.

My only comments would've been about phrasing lengths and where to breath, but as you note it nearly requires circular breathing to actually follow Rascher's arrangement...

It is indeed an extremely live space, so it's hard to fully draw conclusions about your sound, but the impression left is that it's good. Your control over the other stuff, the slap tonguing and the altissimo, were, to me, again: damn impressive!

Hats off, Jack! Keep on doing what you're doing...

This is the best, and the worst day of my saxophoneplaying life.
I have to explain because I think I'm in the wrong topic, but I really don't know where else to put this.

I started playing saxophone 10 years ago at the age of 42( so, should this be at the "late bloomers"?), having a busy family life and a busy part-time job. Just a hobby.
After 3 years I knew I wanted to play mostly classical music( so, this is the classical department?). So. I did and loved everything I learned. My teacher was proud and offered me to make a recording playing the bassoonconcerto by Mozart. At that time I had taken lessons for about 7 years. A pianist was hired especially for me and the head of the music department would make the cd. But he is a "busy" man and just now he has finished it (after almost 3 years) and my teacher found this cd in his letterbox.

So I have heard it tonight........OH, MY GOD!!!!!

My teacher says, I would never play it at this moment like I played it then.
I have a different sax, then it was a SA80II, now I have a Reference.
But I am making so much mistakes!!!!!!! Articulation and timing: BAD, BAD!!!
It sounds terrible.

I play these kind of pieces as if they are studypieces! and this recording was ment to be for studying. And YES!!!, this is working. I feel I have gotten the biggest motivation to study! It is great!! Next thing is: My teacher wants me to write down the things I wanted do elsewises. I am going to make a copy of the sheetmusic and write down, measure by measure, what I think is wrong with it. And I want to change it!! I want to get to work!!!! Oh my god...I want to get to work on it.

I am not going to post it. I get what I need from it and it is no joy to listen to for all you advanced people. I just needed to share my feelings, that it is so bad and at the same time gives me so much joy that I know where to focus on. I know what to do and I have the best teacher of the Netherlands!!!

Here's my own submission from long, long ago. Almost 30 years ago!:shock:

It's the Paul Creston Sonata and my father recorded this on an old mono cassette player during state competition. I was 16 years old and my piano accompanist was only 14 or 15.

Any ways, I hope you enjoy and any and all comments and criticism is welcomed.

Here's a video of myself just a few weeks ago!
I was only 8 in this video!

To all on this forum,

I offer this to simply clear the air and my good name. I was given a recording on cassette tape by my mother and sister after my father passed away and I have to this point believed it to be of my performance of the Creston Sonata. Wallace, Michigansax, and Rossi47 have clearly indicated that they believe this recording to be the work of Don Sinta, a name I am just coming to know as a result of this event. While they may be music students at a collegiate level, I am not. In fact I haven't played my saxophones for nearly 25 years.

I know only two things as fact: first, I did play the Creston in school , as many others undoubtedly have; and second, I did not physically press the record button myself when the recording in question was made. So until I can verify that the performance I posted either is or is not mine, I will not attempt to take credit for it as it was never my intent to do so. It has, as such, been removed. My participation in this forum, as recent as it is, is a result of a new found love of the instrument, not the need for unwarranted recognition or attention.

So be skeptical if you wish but I assure you that I take my possible mistake seriously. With the help of Michigansax and Angel I've located and purchased a copy of Mr. Sinta's performance and once it arrives I will compare the recordings myself.

I wish you all the best.

UPDATE:

I've received the CD of Don Sinta entitled American Music and can now report that Michigansax was 100% right. My mistake, irrespective of it being unintentional, is inexcusable and I am truly sorry. Lesson learned... I won't ever post a recording again unless I physically made the recording myself.

Wow, thanks for uploading those Dannel. I haven't heard that Brahms transcription before.

I've listened to some of your other recordings and read that you played a Keilwerth/Rascher mouthpiece. Are you still on that setup for this recital? Just wondering because these sound a little brighter than others I've heard that you've put up, but it could be the room, the recording equipment, etc. also. I'm curious because I play a Buescher/Caravan and have been thinking about moving to a Keilwerth because I've heard they're tonally similar, but I haven't had any luck finding one to play test.

Great recordings!

No problem! I was not aware they were still up since I have heard from many people that the links do not work anymore.

I still play on a Keilwerth/Rascher setup. The hall that I played in is definitely a much brighter sounding hall.

I'm having a few problems on my Keilwerth and am thinking on trying out those P. Mauriat horns. There is a repairguy in Eugene, Oregon(Craig Bender) that is going to work on my Keilwerth soon that should be able to fix some of the problems I have. He fixed some major issues with my Buescher bari. If you(or anyone else) is interested in some details, PM me. I don't want to spam this thread!

Thanks for listening though!
