Seems like I always end up listening to Sonny Rollins or Kaori Kobayashi. Yesterday I listened to some Charlie Ventura also.

    Happy Apple - Body Popping-Moon Walking-Top Rocking

A new band to me and a great find. Here's allmusic's description:

A Happy Apple is one of those strange children's toys that has a fascination that's hard to explain. It's a heavy, red plastic apple with a smiley face on the outside, ballast in the bottom to keep it standing up, and a slightly muffled chime buried deep in its center so that it can withstand the series of drops, kicks, and smashes to which it is inevitably subjected by its owners. As it turns out, the parallels between this band and its namesake are just too fun to ignore. Happy Apple is a Minneapolis-based saxophone/bass/drums trio that works in an ostensibly free vein, but somehow manages to keep just enough structure in place to make things interesting. Like its namesake, this band has a tough exterior but there's certain chiming prettiness buried deeply within; they also have a smiley face painted clearly on their outside. "The Barstow Sizzler" is free-ish, yet vaguely modal -- a sort of "Ornette in Algiers" sound. "Marvin Says" features an angular, barely tonal yet harmonically purposeful head which segues immediately into a very nifty bass solo. "Where Does a Stranger Go on Christmas Eve?" is contemplative and pretty and features the most attractive bassline of the program. But best of all is "Wishing Book," a loping composition in 15/8 time on which drummer David King tries out every sound and timbre extractable from his kit. Highly recommended.
"If it ain't fun, I want no part of it, man. That's the only reason I play." - Phil Woods

After hearing a few of the members interpretations of a recent TOTM, Ceora, by Lee Morgan I went on a hunt to find a few recordings to see how many interpretations I could find that were by some of my favorites... I had never really listened to George Coleman, but found one by him with Joey DeFrancesco whom I have liked for years... then I came upon a recording by Joey D. back in 1989 on Houston Person's album "The Party" and it became an immediate favorite. Then I found Ceora by Bobby Watson on iTunes... Wow! So many choices out there but I'm really glad I've got these three in my permanent collection now. Until TOTM I didn't really know the tune, now it's stuck in my mind.

Also got hooked on Easy Living by Lanny Morgan and by Sonny Stitt on Tenor... same kind of vibe as I get from Ceora.
"Zoot" would a good name for a kid...

Herbie Hancock: The New Standard. Brecker on soprano... don't hear much of that. I certainly prefer him on tenor...
