I'm looking at a used Selmer Signet alto sax, with serial #878XXX and have looked for what year is was born/made. Does anyone know about when made and is this a good intermediate horn for community band use?

What price are they asking for that horn?
If it has an "S" shaped brace between the body and the bell, it's a keeper. Such a horn lasted me through junior high, onto high school, then to college jazz band, through the bar circuit, and then I gave it to my kid who played it for years in grade school himself. Based upon a legendary horn of the past and made with more care than any of the imports out there today.
"Any of the Imports" Grump? Like Yanis and Selmer Paris models?
I do agree that my "S braced Signet" is a nice horn. And I'm sure you meant to compare it with imported student horns and not the professional level imports. Nice to know that there are other Signet lovers out their besides myself. Cheers Mate!
anyone with distinguished status should know that ser # range signet isnt the buesher desighned model . its the ralph morgan based desighn . a bundy 2 with laq keys. a very good horn and underated
