    Re: subbing in the pit

Subbing can be tough. My bass player friend would spend weeks getting shows dialed in so he could be on the sub list (and hope he might get called). Most of the time, he'd never get called in or...

Re: UK E-BAY Fake SML BEWARE!!

    Hilarious.

I've seen one of these in person. A Chinese copy of an SML. It was awful.

One of my students bought it on ebay and brought it to a lesson. On this one, the bell was soldered on...

    Re: Soft mellow tone

Another good idea is transcribing and playing along with some ballads of a player that is getting the tone you aspire to produce.

Try doing the same tune over and over for a week or two until you...
  5. Re: Beginning college player w/ horn options...too good to pass up?

I'd buy a 23 and buy that committee too. You could still come in under $1K.

Re: Working with the Big B

Yeah jason R is a beast. He will blow a hole in the wall and also send the keys flying off the horn.

Rudresh Mahanthappa is on that record as well.

Re: Working with the Big B

Have a listen to tenor-player Jason Robinson. The Big B has been his main (and only) horn forever. He teaches at Amherst College and has a number of records out.

    Re: 1952 SML Tenor Altissimo

What I'm saying is it slots differently than a selmer but the altissimo is still excellent.

Conns, smls, etc, will slot differently than a selmer as I'm sure you are well aware :)

    Re: 1952 SML Tenor Altissimo

Fwiw, I loved the altissimo on the '52 SML I had.

It was almost too easy. I would often overshoot high As and high Cs because it was so much less resistant than my Selmers.

    Re: Happy Birthday Lennie Niehaus!

He lives here in the San Diego area... occasionally he can be spotted at gigs.

My arranger friend asked him for a few lessons. He said "I think I've earned my retirement"!

    Re: Rant! Master Classes, aaarrrrggghhhhh

I feel your pain. I've been to some horrible masterclasses by world-class musicians... and I think they all had one thing in common: lack of preparation.

Guys come in and say "I'll just...
